I have purchased an old Borgani, a student horn I think. It was used in a Navy band previously and the mouthpiece is what appears to be bakelite/dark plastic and is quite battered and chipped. What would be a good mouthpiece set up for a beginner within a pension budget (pref available in UK) ? I am retired with disability and can't get to a teacher to ask. All replies gratefully considered - Thanks

Ian, that's kind of like asking a bunch of guys on a street corner as high school is getting out, which is the best looking girl in the crowd ;)

We can (and will, LOL) give you a lot of advice -most of which is already here on the forum if you will look- but a personal conversation with someone who understands your situation and logistics might be better.

I would suggest giving the folks at saxophones.uk a call. They are a full-service sax shop in the U.K. http://www.saxophones.co.uk/

Also try John Myatt who will send out up to three mpc's for you to test. The other company does not do this.

myatt.co.uk

I think the phone no. is 01462 420057.

You've probably found one by now, but the best playing and sounding student MPC I ever used is a Ralph Morgan student model.
They are inexpensive but don't sound it.
