I am seeking a good quality hard rubber tenor piece to replace my Morgan 7M. I have been interested in Morgan L and EL models and Lamberson J and L models. However, now I think I would like try Gregory's Mark II model. Has anyone tried his pieces? How do they compare to other high quality HR pieces. I live in Europe, so they do not cost more than Lambersons (Morgans are even here much cheaper, of course).
Thanks,
pete

I can answer part of your question. I have a Freddie Gregory New York alto model and can confirm the superb quality of craftsmanship and the rich and detailed tone. Haven't tried a tenor one or the model you mention, I have no doubt it will be excellent.

Bob Mintzer has been playing Freddie Gregory pieces on his Mark VI Tenor for quite a while. I spoke with him last summer at a master class and he's dedicated to them.

I don't own an original gregory mpc but I had him reface my vintage link and he did a great job. I highly recommend him. He always answered my emails almost immediately, very comfortable to deal with him.

I just picked up a MKIV and absolutely love it. Its free blowing and on the darker side with enough edge to cut through and sound exiteing.
Its a really nicely made piece as well.

I played Mark Douthit's Mark II, facing 7** (in between a 7* and an 8).
TOTALLY INCREDIBLE. I play a silver-plated YTS-875S and nothing brought that sort of life out of my horn before, ever. It had the warmth and control of a great rubber link AND an extremely gutsy, fierce and clear sound. I literally was speechless.
I've been saving up for one for some time. I'll be getting an 8.
Hope that helps.

Rahsaan,
Did you try a metal one or the HR model. I'm curious. I thought Mark would be playing on a Mark IV model from the recordings I've heard of him.

please try out the Morgan 9M, hard rubber, with Java 3'5's.
Good Luck!

The Mk IV is a high baffle model - the II is a closer comparo to a Link.
As I recall, Bob Mintzer plays a HR Mk II 7** on an early Mk VI.
I wrote up something about this earlier this year. In summary, I spent the better part of a day playing a friend's collection of vintage Selmer tenors and vintage metal Links (and my ol' Barone collection and many more). At the end of a long day, our collective conclusion was that my Freddie Gregory Super Deluxe (ie goldplated) Mk II 8 was the best Link of the lot. It got the most sound out of each of the best of the horns.
Right now it is my main jazz 'piece on my silver Gloger Ref 54 neck/Ref 36. My Lamberson J8 has moved to its new home - my silverplated Borgani Jubilee.
I still have one mouthpiece refaced by him for my MKVI tenor. It is a vintage LS Selmer Soloist. I can confirm the superb quality of craftsmanship and all the other good things other people said in this thread. In my hopinion Freddie is one of the last Masters. He knows the secrets, the art of refacing and much more... ;)

ive tried several gregories and they just dont compare to either of my links. Possibly because im used to the way they play but i just found that i couldn't get the horn to sing the way i like it to

Sorry its taken me so long! The mouthpiece I was speaking of early was a metal MK II. I have played Jeff Coffin's rubber Freddie Gregory and found it to have a fairly insane amount of projection. It didn't have the body/weight that I go for, but the projection was a total trip. I don't know what sort of model it is, and I don't think Coffin does either, as it was made before FG labeled everything. Pretty unique piece.
As for my mouthpiece search, I'm going up to IAJE in January and trying some of Jody Espina's new designs before just biting the bullet and sending Mr. FG my hard-earned dough. I also hope to try a good T77 here soon.

Just a quick update. I've now got a FG MK 7** and an 8, both MK II models. They're both FANTASTIC. The 7** is my favorite mouthpiece I've ever played. Simply awesome. The tip opening is PERFECT for me.
Both mouthpieces offer a very deep sound not devoid of brightness and great control. Suffice it to say I've played a few FGs now and I haven't found ONE that didn't outplay everything else I've played...
Peace,

Hi everyone, some real interesting reading on here. Im new to sax on the web so be gentle.
I have recently purchased a Jody Jazz Dv 7* which is simply fantastic. I now have an Otto Link Super Tone Master N.Y. 8 signed by freddie gregory. It sounds great but its really hard work on a long gig and i guess im not advanced enough as a player to really do this piece justice, does anyone have any idea on a value for this if i was to sell it?
