I have a question about Runyon mouthpieces for the bari.

I'm 16 and I've been playing the bari for about 4 years. I've used a hard rubber Meyer with a 6 tip opening for the past 2 for jazz ensemble. I've been using size 3 regular Vandoren reeds.

If I want a less muffled and louder tone for jazz, what kind of Runyon mouthpiece would I be looking for? I have been leaning towards getting one of the metal ones, with the spoiler.

I've heard the HR Quantums are very nice, though I have no actual experience with them.

Thanks... I also have a question to add to this while I am at it: metal or plastic? Specifically, how do the metal and plastic Runyons differ?

Yes, give a plastic (nylon) Quantum a shot. Plastic is cheaper than metal, and popular opinion is that the plastic Q is brighter than the metal Quantum. I use a plastic Q 10 with plasticcover 3 reeds on tenor. I love the sound, very loud, full and bright--nothing muffled about it. I wish I had this type of mp in High school. Pay the extra 10 bucks or so for the spoiler insert.
If you have exta bucks to spend, check out JodyJazz.com. Jody sells a modified Q for bari, and he'll help you pick out the right tip size; also has a good return policy.

The great thing about the quantum Delrin Baritone mouthpiece is its size. Other HR mouthpieces are like a huge cigar in your mouth. the Q is like a tenor piece in comparison. It gives a bright edge that makes you play with confidence and agility. So you dont need to plod along. The thing I like about bari playing with a Q is that you give the altos and tenors a run for their money in the solo stacks.once the band master hears you crack out a solo on Bari with the force of a tenor he will start to think a little different about who takes what. The Bari Delrin Quantum is the only mouthpiece to do this.IMHO

One more question: would it be worth getting a Runyon Quantum to replace the rubber Meyer that I already have, or is the difference not enough for me to get the new mouthpiece?

Definitely try a Quantum, it will surprise you!!! The Jaguar is good too as is the Custom.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different tip openings? A Runyon 8 is equal to the Meyer 6 that I have, should I just stay with that? I'm pretty comfortable with the 6.

You may want to consider the Jaguar. Although the Delrin plastic pieces are less expensive, the Jaguar can be had relatively inexpensively as metal mouthpieces go. I just got a Jaguar 10 (.109 tip opening) that I am enjoying. It has a rich sound all up and down the horn, and intonation is good. It is an unusual bari mouthpiece in that it has a very small profile in the mouth. In fact, my alto ligature was too big for it. The best way I can describe the sound is visually. Imagine the difference between a flashlight beam with a wider spread and one focused and like a spotlight. To me, that is how the Jaguar sounds - like the powerful spotlight. It certainly has edge and power, yet I can subtone easily. I also have a Morgan 7J (.080 tip opening) hard rubber mouthpiece which is very good. The Jaguar has more power and edge as far as small combo work (I play mainly jazz and mainly bari). If you have been playing on a Meyer 6, it is probably too close for you now. You most likely would not want to go to a Jaguar 10 from a Meyer 6, but you certainly could manage a 7 or possibly even an 8. Charlie A at www.gigdust.com has about the best prices around on all Runyon mpcs. www.junkdude.com can fix you up with the Morgan mpc. If you have been playing a Meyer, and feel comfortable with it, you may want the Morgan as it is closer to a Meyer than the Runyon mpcs. Consider a Morgan 7J. It will be more open, plays well up and down the horn, and will not break your bank (but will be more expensive than a Meyer). Sometimes you get what you pay for, and with either of these mpcs you will.

with runyons you get more than what you pay for.

Well, you should have it now. How do you like it?

Love it. It's a HUGE improvement over the Meyer. I got the 9... I thought it would be too big for me but I tried it anyway, and it was the best. Also, it's so thin it seems like an alto mouthpiece.
I can increase my volume a lot more, but I can still play as softly as before. A great mouthpiece. :)

Runyon Jaguar is a nice bari piece for jazz. Its a metal mouthpiece with rubber feel to it;very easy to play, notes pop out.
