View Full Version : Main type of music you enjoy playing

02-05-2003, 04:15 PM
With the variety of musicians we have on this forum, I always wondered what single type of music do you enjoy playing the most (your favorite). I was weened on R&B back in the 60's. Although I have played everything from Rock to Dance music I was always partial to R&B. How about you? Please cast your vote for the one favorite type of music you like to play the most.

:D This is the first time I have used the poll feature on this forum. I believe you have to post a reply to my message before you are able to cast a vote? Can anyone out there verify this for me :?:

These questions always leave me with the same feeling as does "Which of your children do you like the best?" Would perhaps the question be better posed as "Which style of music gets most of your attention as a player?"

No. At least I didn't just now.

Thanks Troy for answering my question ... I just stopped in to see the results so far...looks like Jazz is the front runner(not a surprise) :D.

None of the above. Although I guess I could answer both jazz and rock. I do a lot of progressive rock, King Crimson/Yes kinda stuff. I do some jazz stuff, but it's not bop or purist jazz by any stretch. Mostly I do ambient electronic and experimental fringe in addition to the prog rock and jazz.

Some day I will write a song in a major key, I keep promising myself that. And in only one major key at that!

Meanwhile, I'm a minor composer ...

I voted for DANCE. Yet, I will listen to any type of music if a sax is used in it. I do not like Polka music nor would I go see a Polka band, unless the're using a sax. I can drown out the other instruments and listen mainly to the sax part. I just like the sax and its versatility in music. :)

I picked R&B but I really like to play the old Big Band stuff and those tunes from the 30's and 40's.

I like playing blues and jazz but also "oldies and goldies" and movie- and tv-themes.

What about SKA?!? Ska is sooooo fun! Blowin' solos and all those purdy grrls dancing!
Of course, jazz is more rewarding musically for me.

I still have a thing for military/symphonic band music. There aren't near enough performing groups in the genre, IMHO. Or maybe there are, given that if people wanted to hear this music, there'd be bands to meet the need and lots of concert band CDs in the racks.

That's too bad; after all, this genre was what generated the birth of the saxophone!

Anybody else feel this way?

man, I love playing everything from rock 'n' roll to big band swing to hardcore jazz ... I guess jazz if I had to pick one, but the sax is definitely not meant to confine to one genre :D

Why can I vote in some polls and not others? Has this one been closed already? Or did I vote once before, then forgot I voted, but the website keeps track of who voted?

Harrell -- you can set the length of time a poll runs, maybe some of them had set dates instead of being open indefinitely.

(I'm all for funk too! Maceo, James Brown, Tower of Power ... dude.)

I think that if you're a sax player, jazz is the most probable style of music to attract your attention. The other styles mentioned surely do employ horn sections which will include saxophones, but the horns are used for background accompaniment. The featured players are usually vocalists, guitartists and pianists (and occasionally a sax solo).

Therefore, if you want to hear other saxophonists do their thang, jazz is the place to go. I vote for jazz- naturally. :D

Well, I posted my reply but there's no option available for me to cast my vote. I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm guessing Riff hasn't seen many R&B, funk, or rock acts with horn players. Maceo Parker, Jr. Walker, King Curtis, Bobby Keys, Clarence Clemons? I play blues (not in the poll), rock, and R&B. I solo on every tune I play.

I like Blues, R&B and Rock the best, but also enjoy playing Jazz Rock and Smooth Jazz. Never quite mastered Bop - I guess I don't listen to it enough to get the feel of it. I think listening is key to mastering anything.

I like to play music, I mean Jazz, Rock (fusion), Reggea, Smooth & Acid Jazz..... :)

It depends of the moment. Some times, I like to play soft tunes with soft playing and some other times, I want to blow the heck out like Brecker (I didn't say that I manage to play like him ;) ) on Rock tunes...

I'm with you Martin! I've played in rock, reggae, r&b, blues, acoustic, ambient, jazz, & other kinds of bands, and I've never had to play in a section, and be relegate to parts in the background. I've always been, like those cats you mention, a "colorist" & soloist, usually fronting the band.

Now, I don't know why exactly, it's not like I'm the baddest virtuoso or anything, I just never had thoughts to do anything but express myself all night long. I have run into a number of bitter keyboard players who were sax players, still play a solo here or there, but are hired mainly to play keys. Once I called someone like that, to do a gig, and when he found out I played sax, he immediately asked " & what else"? To which I just said, "flute"? He was actually pissed that I got gigs as a sax player.... At the time I was a bit taken aback, since I'm thinking of all the sax players out there, and hell, that's all they do too...

Oh, almost forgot, the poll.... yeah, there's no way I could possibly answer that question with one answer, naw.

If there was a "funk-rock-blues-soul" category, that's where my vote would go.

Or maybe that's just a sub-genre of "jazz"?

Yeah! Someone else actually voted for Classical. I do love all the others, but Classical has got to be my favorite.
