Well, I might consider a custom Z, and don't know which finish I should get. If people could just vote for their favourite or have any recommendations I'd love them. Thanks!

Choices: Lacquered, Silver-Plate, Black-Lacquered, Unlacquered (assuming there's no Gold-Plated)

1 vote for lacquered. :) :)

Another vote for lacquered finish. There is a lot of hype about unlackqered 82Z.
I have tested a dozen of them and the difference between lackqered and unlacqered model is non existant. There is a confusion about the sound and feel amongst the players when it comes to this horn. Extra vibration on 82Z unlacqered does not equal better sound.
However 82Z is by far (IMHO) best modern horn out there.

Indeed. ;)

groan. This has more lives than a litter of cats.

to answer the question:
I voted for unlaquered when I bought one.
I voted for a different sound when I sold it.

groan. This has more lives than a litter of cats. Specifically, my neighbor's cats...but I digress...

I vote lacquer. I've always liked the look of Yamaha's gold lacquer. And that's my criteria for selecting the finish of a horn: appearance.

Does 82Z come in Gold Plating?

Everyone loves gold, but I think silver is great too, it stands out and it's different and unique when you sit in a band. You have a whole row of golden looking saxes then pops out a silver one, and everyone goes, wow! Although my favourite colour looking sax is this chrome-like colour. Silver yet darker, more grey tone inside. Shiny dark silver-grey. I haven't seen a REAL sax like that, only a picture of a fingering chart.

I was in the music store the other day, walked by a flute of that colour i was talking about. AND WOW I was so suprised, I didn't expect to see that colour. I asked the sales person and he said "If you mistreat the flute for a while, the silver will turn into that colour" Strange, but do you guys (and girls) think so?

Do you mean something like the color of this sax?

Yes, something like that. THe colour is very hard to describe, but that's the closest I've seen.

Ok, I found a similar picture. http://www.2xj.dk/images/sax_grey.jpg

I can say it's a lot like a picture of a sax, that is in black and white.

My picture and yours are both very similar. Check the out the Keilwerth Shadow. I'm pretty sure it's the color you're looking for.

Cheers,

I don't know, is it? I don't think I have the money for it. Is the shadow better than the custom Z?

I bought and vote Unlacquered...I did notice a sound difference...Plus I have dented it a couple of times already (within a year of owning it) and the dents heal without scars!

Jedi: . . . and you attribute the sound difference to the finish? How so? Compared to what? DAVE

I am not a big fan of "different lacq. for different sound". ;)
I love the look of a BLACK 82Z, and that's what I have now.

Am I the only one votes for Black 82Z ?

I say get the finish you want no matter what you believe its effect may be.

I beleive finish has no measurable effect but ultimately may have some psychological effect which in turn causes some tonal effects.

I vote for the UL. Does it play better than any other finish? Who knows...... it is a great playing horn though.

How dirty is your unlacquered... I guess that's the problem. I could get it because it's "unique" but then silver is too (in my school anyways)

My UL went through a stage where all the finger prints would show up and it looked ugly ugly ugly for about two months. The finish is now a more of a matte look across most of the horn.

Nice, have pictures?

I'm still deciding.. how do you make it oxidize evenly?

You dont play the outside of the horn. I vote for unlaquered because of the sound not because of the way it looks.

I'm just wondering what would constitute an "official" poll?

CircaRevival

I'm thinking it would be a poll where you select the option and shows up as a bar graph, right? 8-)

Ya, I didn't know how to make a poll back then, :D

My YTS-82Z was put together for me by Yamaha in the USA...Unlacquered body and neck...lacquered keys...No high F#. I was a Vintage dealer before the days of ebay...I have owned and professionally played everything under the sun. For me this tenor has been the best. My set up is a Lawton 8BB stainless steel mouthpiece, with Fibrecell 2&1/2 reeds.
