:( CAN ANYONE TELL ME. IS IT POSSIBLE TO PLAY TENOR SAX OR CLARINET WITH FALSE TEETH? I PLAY BOTH AND AM CONCERNED BECAUSE MY DENTIST HAS TOLD ME THAT I MAY NEED SOME FALSE TEETH (LOWER FRONT) IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE. :?:

It is most definatly possible to play. I did a gig once with a guy who everyone called Gummy. The guy didn't have a tooth in his mouth, and said he found it farily easy to adjust his embrucher.
I can't speak from experiance though....

Super Glue your false teeth to the mouthpiece. That way they will always be at the ready when you are.

I've seen some pictures of Phil Woods that look like he got a new grill piece, but I'm not sure.

I used to play in a band with a Bari player who had a lower front partial. He sounded fine.

My embochure improved when I got a lower front partial after a car accident. I have a nice even bite--no more holes in the mouthpiece.
how about false two upper front teeth? :\

My left top front tooth has been replaced after a bike accident several years ago. The false one is slightly longer than its natural counterpart, but I got used to it. Generally, remember the pressure comes from your muscles, not from the teeth. Only a slight support is ok from the teeth, so any false teeth should not be an issue. Maybe it takes a while to get used to the new feeling.

Saxophone playing is fine with dentures. However I was told by an old-timer that your gum would start shrinking after you have your real teeth removed, which affects flute playing more than anything.

If I remember correctly, Stan Getz played on bare gum and sounded fine.

I got my front four teeth reshaped and actually I sound better. But I know it isn't because of the teeth... but i still sound better :!:
But seriously, you should be fine. I was worried that it would affect my playing too, but after two practice sections, a little tweak here a little tweak there, and I was fine.

Jimmy Skidmoore had nashers, and Bobby Wellins certainly looks like he has them. Nothing wrong with their playing.

Coltrane had terrible dental problems and had his teeth replaced at an early age.

bottomline is:
1. Brush well with good toothpaste at least 2-3 times daily, when you wake up and before you go to bed.
2. Use Listerine or any other effective bacteria killing mouthwash.
3. Invest in a good quality toothbrush.
4. Visit your dentist once every 6 months.
5. Floss if necessary.
Start taking care of those precious teeth!!  :P
