Has anyone been diagnosed with laryngoceles? I've been having some throat trouble lately and suspect it may be from (stupidly) blowing with my throat instead of my gut. Anybody?

From the Merck Health Manual:
Laryngoceles are outpouchings of the mucous membrane of a part of the voice box (larynx).

Laryngoceles may bulge inward, resulting in hoarseness and airway obstruction, or outward, producing a visible lump in the neck. Laryngoceles are filled with air and can be expanded when a person breathes out forcefully with the mouth closed and the nostrils pinched shut. These pouches tend to occur in musicians who play wind instruments. On a computed tomography (CT) scan, laryngoceles appear smooth and egg-shaped. Laryngoceles may become infected or filled with mucuslike fluid. The usual treatment is to remove them surgically.

Follow up: I saw a ENT (ear, nose & throat) specialist this week. Before I told him I played sax he suspected laryngoceles from my symptoms (intermittent one-sided "sore throat" and hoarseness) and once I told him that I played sax - and he completed the exam - he concluded it is indeed a minor laryngocele. He noted that they are uncommon.

Coincidentally, the doc was a former clarinetist who now is primarily a singer and he admonished me about the need for wind players to take care of our voices much in the same way as a singer. Interesting.
