Anyone out there play didgeridoo? From what I've heard on the web, you can get some very cool sounds out of these!

I was at the Goodwill store today & picked one up for a mere $3.50!

I can get a pretty decent sound out of it...but no cool effects.

Yet :)

I have played some, mostly on PVC pipe digi's. Alternative sounds come from the mouth cavity size, singing a note while blowing especially at the third and the fifth, screams, grunts, growls and a multitude of other sounds combined with the regular drone.

Try listening to "Winds of Warning". This is a favorite of mine.

There is a solo that showcases what a real player can do!

I have one and haven't picked it up in quite a bit of time, but I do have a sound clip of me on a didge with an electronic (keyboarded) flute as accompainment. I'll get it up as soon as I get a good hoster 8-).

Hi
I play the Didge
the "cool" sounds are made in many different ways.
while blowing try Howling like a dog or flutter tounging or both together.
All the Cool sounds are made in the throat or by changes to the oral cavity. you can get vibrato by opening and closing the throat.
Great for circle breathing pactice too
And $3.50 i paid $200 for my current one but it does have great tone 8-)
Have fun with it and good luck

I've read that most people who play are able to circular breathe. Is this a neccessity to learn how to play the didgeridoo?

My director is able to circular breathe, I am not able to but can still play didge.

It helps, but by no means is it a necessity. 8-)

You Don't have to circle breath, but the idea is to have a constant drone with the effects over the top the longer you can hold the drone the better it sounds. There is no 4/4 time in didge music

Huh? No 4/4 time? What didge music do you read?

I didn't know you could read didge music, i have never seen any written.
what i meant was traditional Aboriginal music was not written and was all improv with no time values. the didge plays the sound of the bush and the enviroment. jumping kangaroo, spinning bommarang , fitting dogs etc. if you have heard native Aboriginal music you will know what i mean.

Yes

You're right, but in a POW WOW or other cultural ensemble the didge goes along with any other time (4/4, 2/4/, 12/8, etc).

And actually I probably can show you some didge music that I have written 8-)

Pick up a video instruction tape on didgeridoo. I have one by David Hudson, an aboriginal musician in Australia. I think I got it from Amazon.com. He is able to play five or six animal sounds at the same time. The instrument has an intriguing sound. It reminds me of the minimalism of Phillip Glass.

Another didj player here. I mastered the circular breathing thing a few years ago on didj and it makes playing it more fun (never figured out how youre supposed to be able to do it on sax though). Its a fab instrument, I love it. Sadly got rid of my termite hollowed one a while back though :( but my bamboo one gets dragged out of the cupboard every once in a while.
