It seems the two most popular are Napster & iTunes. I've used both & like them both a great deal. I'm curious to hear opinions on this subject.

For iTunes users that buy more than 10 songs a month, why do you choose iTunes over Napster???

For people who use other programs, why do you use them?

With itunes, you actually own what you buy.
Although they do use some copy protection, it's only moderately restrictive, and not terrible.

Napster, you are just renting the tunes.
You stop subscribing, you lose access to your downloads.

So you can fill up your ipod or whatever for one monthly fee, but that is a monthly fee from now until forever, if you actually want to be able to listen to the music....

So depending on your needs, you may find one model better than the other.

Oh, one more thing. I believe Napster is windows only.

Just a word of warning to other out there, I really have to give a thumbs down to Rhapsody. I tried it out for a short period of time. Immediately after I signed up, my volume of spam (which was already quite large) increased tremendously.

Dude... see LEGAL music download programs!!

But along that note, iTunes is quite a nice program. The new Podcasts are pretty neat, and there are a practically infinite number of them available... for FREE! When you buy something, you own it as an mp3. You can burn up to 7 copies of a single playlist, which lets you do whatever you want as long as you're not mass-producing it. Copy for the car, studio, kitchen, bathroom...

Also, you can have access to the songs you've purchased on up to 5 computers. This is great for me because I can put everything I download onto my iPod easily, which was originally mac-formatted for my buddy's computer, but still hear them on my computer at home as well. I'd reformat the iPod, but don't feel like uploading countless CD's and mp3's onto my iPod all over again that I no longer have. iTunes just makes everything so simplified.

www.emusic.com

Plenty of great jazz, just not the most popular recordings. $10 per month for 40 tracks, 25 cents per mp3 file. If I'm working on a particular tune I go there and download several versions of the same song to learn from.

For some dumb reason they don't put the search or browse functions on the opening promo page. But you can get to them by clicking the member's "Sign in Here" link or using this bookmark:
https://www.emusic.com/sessions/signon.html

Exactly. Guns don't kill people, death kills people. People can die from excessive bleeding, cardiac arrest, lung collapse, or any number of other conditions, but a little piece of metal isn't the problem. Your body just couldn't survive its environment, and IT is the problem to the system. Not some racist freak with a dozen clips and a suicide note, of course, because he is just a product of his environment, and to place any blame upon him would be *disturbingly* immoral.

Sick world we live in, huh? Just my $.02

I use Napster for their Napster to Go service. You can purchase tracks like on iTunes for 99 cents a track or varing costs per CD, and you own it. Otherwise you do rent it. However the Napster to Go services allows me to download all I want and transfer them to a NtG compatable mp3 player for just the subscription fee and no additional fee. So I can download and change what's on my mp3 player on the fly for just the monthly fee. The downside... it is only for Windows, so my mac laptop is left out in the dust.

I'll put my vote in for the previously mentioned emusic.com. Been on this service for a year and very happy. The jazz is not what you will find at the CD store for the most part and it's great to be able to have some of these old and otherwise hard to find recordings. The fee here is quite cheap and you 'own' the tracks or complete CD that you download. Lots of other stuff in non jazz but I haven't checked that out.

Great for finding out about an artist that I'm not that familiar with and then going to the CD store and spending some real cash on their music!

And, no problems with additional spam volumes.

Would be nice if emusic.com showed you their catalog before asking you to register and give your credit card data.

I laughed at what bubble girl said about the CD store. She's right, of course. If you want the liner notes and pics and everything that's the way to go.

I do like Rhapsody. It's legal - you pay if you download. Some advantages to emusic and itunes, I think. It's streamed to you so you can listen to anything for the full cut (not just a 30 second sample). That's over 1 Million albums, dude. Another plus, if you down load to disc or to burn, you can down load it several more times for other devices for no extra charge. It down loads on my Rio just fine. To use it there are various monthly charges, mine is about $9 per month.

Since I like many and various genres (reggae, tango, baroque, liturgical music, doo wop, blue grass, etc.) along with jazz, Rhapsody really fits the bill for me. Try it YMMV.

This may be OT but something has really been bugging me about burning downloads to CD. Has ANYONE figured out how to effectively use any of the CD labelling systems. I have three or four and they all stink. I can NEVER get the print outs to work on the stick on labels. Also the art work in the programs is lousy. For now, I have to make do with a sharpie. Any suggestions?

BTW, I have no spam problems from Rhapsody. Maybe the spam load was from other events?

My thing with buying CDs is I'm very picky, and tend to not ever like a whole CD, and hate buying a CD for 1-2 songs. Where with Napster I can pretty much just get what I'm looking for and almost build my own music station.

If you're in the market for an inkjet printer, the Epson R200 is under $100 and prints directly on printable CDs. Best solution I've seen yet.

Oh, and FWIW, I use iTunes.

iTunes all the way. Podcasts are excellent, and the albums are all pretty cheap, it's also essential to take advantage of the music store if you have an iPod. If I don't buy it from iTunes it's coming from Amazon, which also has very low prices on Jazz. I got a $30 gift card for both the iTunes music store and Borders (hosted by amazon.com) for Christmas and am taking advantage of them right now. :)

Bubblegirl has a point. A cheaper way is to use your public library. I live a block from the main library which has a large CD collection.
