Hi

I've finally made up my mind to learn piano after years of threatening to do it.

Any suggestions as to a good model for a beginner? I reckon i'll have a budget of about £1000.

Thanks in advance

does it have to be an actual tickle-the-ivories piano? I'm getting excellent mileage out of a Casio Privia digital piano. 88 fully-weighted keys, over 100 decent sounds (the Grand Piano sounds are quite good), full MIDI capabilities for $600. it's all I need for studying the basics. close enough to a piano that I have no problems making the switch when I take lessons. If I were you I'd take the rest of that money and go on a vacation.

yeah that's the way that i was starting to think

to get anything halfway decent as an upright i'd definitely have to look 2nd hand

which model privia do you have?

I have the PX-300. it sounds like the PX-100 is pretty solid but for a hundred bucks more the 300 has more sounds and more MIDI capabilities, not that I use that a lot now, but I would like to explore that stuff more down the road and this way my keyboard is something I can "grow into" more. I got the $30 X shaped stand with it and I'm good to go. I don't know how this piano would be for gigging or how it would sound through an amp or anything like that because I don't plan on using it for that, but I'm glad I have one of these in my studio now.

by the way

I have a Baldwin Pianovelle PS1000, and I highly recommend it.

It does 1000 things I haven't figured out, but it also does "piano", which is all I really wanted.

As for lessons, I'm going ultra-cheap. My son started taking piano lessons last year, and I'm just following along with him, in his Alfred's Young Beginners series of books. He's halfway through his fourth set of books (Level D), and I'm following him every step of the way. OK, as a grown man, I'm getting tired of songs about tadpoles and puppy dogs, but my goal was to learn piano, and avoid paying for two sets of lessons each week.

I'll still never have the talent my young son has, though. :(

i dont think they ever need to be tuned, and they are easy to carry around iam thinking of starting to play piano again. you can call me a newbie too.

When my wife began taking piano lessons eight months ago I bought her a Roland EM 25 digital keyboard for about US$300-plus. Roland is a good brand known for its pro-level keyboards.
The entry-level Yamahas are cheaper and if you're on a real budget the Casios are even cheaper but the sound quality is not as good.

were you talking about the stand specifically made for Casio Privia's? because that one here is around $100 too, which is still less than 99 pounds but that one is unnecessary. I got a plain old stand made by Pinnacle that is much cheaper, plenty sturdy and folds up in seconds. I think the more expensive stand is just for style.
