Does anyone have this? I'll buy it, or I have two horns to trade. Alto markVI 202 XXX, and tenor mark VI 154 XXX.

Randy Jones has done the "set-up" on one of my personal SX90R Black Nickel-plated tenors (SN 101xxx) which is for sale on his Tenor Madness website at a very attractive price. This horn is in top physical/cosmetic/playing condition and is one of 3 I've personally selected and own. Please note these horns are not not finished with black "lacquer" but are actually plated with black nickel whch contributes greatly to the tone. It's worth noting, too, that the SX90R's prior to SN 103xxx are generally preferred since they are perceived by experienced players to have significantly more "body" in the tone than the later - and current - production horns. No "bad" tone holes or "stuffy" D-2 on this horn, either.

I'll defer to your experience, but I've never heard of the pre-103xxx models being preferred. In fact, my understanding is that the stuff D problem was worse on those models before 109xxx or so.

Doc,

I emailed them about the horn. I will probably get it. I just need to unload my VI first. Well, I'll probably end up with some good money after that too. The thing I like best about your horn is the price. BTW, could you lay some more info on me about the effects of plating a horn?

No need to "defer" Morry. I've been playing one of my SX90RBN tenors since 1989 so have fairly extensive experience with both my own and client-owned Keilwerths since that time and dealt with many "top-line" pro players who also know the horns quite well and share my view. The same is true of "top-line" technicians (such as Randy Jones) who have extensive longitudinal experience with these horns. Some design changes @ 103xxx and 113xxx (verified by Keilwerth tech reps) were made. Comparison play-testing done on horns during the entire production run on the SX90R BN to date has resulted in most players who really know the evolution of the model well having a definite preference for the pre-103xxx versions. As an aside, I've yet to hear a "stuffy D problem" on the Keilwerths (or any other top line horn) that can't be solved by using a proper mpc/reed combination for the player's development level. YMMV.

I hope you're successful in getting the horn, Rubel. It's an exceptionally fine example, especially with the Randy Jones set-up. A search on the SOTW Forum will give you a lot of differing opinions on the topic of plating. In my collection of tenors I have both gold and silver plated horns but they are different brands and vintages from the Keilwerths on which I definitely prefer the black nickel plate.

I know this is a tough question to answer, but how does it compare to a mark VI tenor? I like mine, but I'm very, very tired of having to constantly have it adjusted, as is the way with all old horns.

Hmm, I'm thinking of not going through with this idea, after speaking to many friends.

You should probably ignore what your friends (and us forum members) say, and play what you like. Take your Mark VI and go to a dealer that has a well regulated SX90R in stock. Blow the two side-by-side, and decide which is best for you.

It's not even about my horn anymore though. I want to sell my alto and tenor VI's, and buy one REALLY nice, simply incredibly-playing tenor VI. After trying a friend's today, I know they exist. Then with whatever cash is left, i'll buy an alto.

Hey Doc, don't hold your breath on this one. If you read back a few postings on this thread, you'll see that he's changed his mind on acquiring a J-K.

No problem, George. The JK referred to was sold several weeks ago to someone who KNEW what he wanted and was able to pay for it immediately! Thanks for the thought.........
