3rd Octave Key

I've recently been dabbling with oboe - I'm a pro sax, clt & flt player - for fun(!). As a result of looking into oboes I've noticed the intermediate and above have a 3rd octave key. I am aware that the "standard" fingering in the 3rd octave doesn't use any octave key as on my (donated) student oboe so how is this used? Is it held down (with the back octave key as it is hard to reach otherwise) or just flicked as in bassoon? Any help with this would be appreciated as a friend of mine has also started dabbling and has an oboe with this extra key but we do not the range to properly test it yet!
