I'm looking for my dream tenor. I've tried the WW&BW. I had 4 36's. The first was not shop checked and had massive leaks. The second had a dent in the bell right on the paris emblem, the third had a very minor dent near the post your left thumb points when on the octave key. The fourth didn't have full engraving.

The second played very well. Solid robust open sound. But the dent bothered me so I sent it back.

Plus It seems like the 36 and 54 are as good as most Sixes but; it also seems like there are some sixes with more character. My plan is to get a Mark VI tenor through sax quest. The descriptions seem pretty good. And if one or two of them don't pan out just go with the 36 or 54 through them.

The whole problem is I've tried some sixes before and alot of them just don't play right. Do the Mark VI tenors listed as mint "monster" players on Sax Quest live up to the billing?

If not I'd rather just save myself the agony and go right with one of the reference horns.

What do you guys think? :?:

I think if you're going to truly take advantage of either SaxQuest or Randy Jones (who has a lot of VI's of his own), that you are already committed to spending top dollar for a great horn. That said, why not just take a trip out to visit one or the other or both?

I bought a MK VI tenor off of Mark at Sax Quest last fall. It was exactly as described. When I took it to my tech to look at after I got it he found nothing to do on it. It was packed great and in-spite of the outer box looked like it went to war the inner bax and sax was just fine. As far as a ref 36 or 54 being "just like a MK VI" I would say TRY the MK VI before making that statement. I am sure Mark has a return policy if you do not like it send it back. I have played many ref horns and for me I will keep my MK VI thank you. He has a deal with a repair shop named Tenor Madness I think in Iowa and they have the reputation of doing great work. Happy shopping.

I bought my Ref 36 from Saxquest almost two years ago.
I sold my MK VI through them, and saw how they advertised it- I think they were quite accurate.
Comparing the 36 to my VI, the 36 was 'rounder' and had a bigger bottom end. The VI was brighter, and would have been better for really loud groups, or rock or something. (or if you plain like the brighter sound).

I would recommend Saxquest, I had very good dealings with them.

Probably but I don't live out there anymore. I bought my last two Selmer's via mailorder/web and have had wonderful success with both - my III came from USA Horn and my Ref 36 came from Brasswind/Woodwind of Melbourne, Australia. No problems with shipping damage or setup with either horn.

Go for the Tone,

George

Sabritas: Give Baxter-Northrup in Sherman Oaks (San Fernando Valley of L.A.) a call. They often have vintage saxophones for sale and/or on consignment. DAVE

I ended up buying a VI locally for a fair price. Sax quest does return calls, emails. But it just takes em a while. They've obvioulsy got a good thing going, but they need to improve their call back times.
