I just stumbled across this Buffet S1 tenor on ebay...

would it be worth snatching up and having my great tech fix it up? I think I heard somewhere that the S1's are pretty solid horns...
could someone enlighten me a little bit?

ws- I had an S1 for a while. They have amazing keywork. It played good but not as powerful as my SDA.
The one you're looking at could be good but it looks like it may have been in a few battles with the floor. That plating wear looks kind of unusual the way it's perfect in one spot and gone right next to it. The bow looks like dentwork city. All the missing pearls made my alarm go off too. Maybe an anomaly-maybe a careless former owner? The seller seems to be honest and fairly ignorant about horns-not good if you want a thorough assessment. "...does not need an overhaul." translation: needs an overhaul. (probably)
If you're looking for a powerful horn maybe you should keep looking though I've only played one S1. Maybe others are better?
My gut feeling is to pass this one up. caveat emptor you know...

ws- If you're interested in a S-1 in excellent condition, mine is still for sale at a very reasonable price. True, they are not as powerful as a Keilwerth, but the tone more than makes up for it....I've taken my S-1 to swing band gigs and had no trouble being heard. E-mail me if you'd like more details: Saxydude05@yahoo.com And as for fixing the one up on e-bay.......no ordinary tech can work on an S-1, most are not familiar with the keywork and they don't understand how to adjust them (at least in my experiences with techs.) Thanks, and let us know if you grab it.

has anyone here ever heard of a sax by the name of MAXTONE? Why is nickel such a good finish?

Nickle is hard, prevents corrosion and is easily electroplated on brass. It thus increases the durability of your sax even if the nickle plate is only a few microns thick.
