View Full Version : Tank!

I love this song but its just way to complicated for me to even think about trying to arrange.. The song "Tank!" was composed by Yoko Kanno who creates music for Anime Series("Tank!" is the theme song from "Cowboy Bebop"). Its a pretty cool little song that I wish one of my bands I'm a part of could play but no music..

Any help is appreciated...

That song is actually not very complicated. The harmonies are pretty tight, and the melody follows a I-IV pattern of the same exact cell, based on the blues scale. The complicated thing is the balance; listen to how loud the LP and the guitar are compared to the band. The chords are a bit weird but with some practice you'll be able to write out most of the parts. The trouble with a song like this is finding a good recording, or contacting the composer, she's very hard to contact at all.

this show is tight as hell!! anyway i got the sound track to the first season and tank is on it! if you need a recording you can get it at amazon or one of those establishments or you can be cheap and get it for free on kazaa!
my two cents anyway

"Tank!" is the theme song from "Cowboy Bebop"
What do cowboys have to do with bebop?
What do tanks have to do with either cowboys or bebop?

You kids today and your incongruity...grumble :?

You would probably have to see the show to get the whole connection. The shows about a bunch of bounty hunters in the future which are also refereed to as "Cowboys" in the show. They have a ship called the "Bebop." As for "Tank" I would have to assume that the hard driving feeling of the song reminded her of a Tank. Not sure about that one. But I guess it doesn't matter. Its a cool song so who cares.... Although I think I will have to try and contact the composer eventually (Little time to actually do it myself and I suck at arranging music) If I ever get the music I hope to get my Jazz band to play it and I'll keep you guys posted. The composers still a genius and I would recommend that you guys still check her out..

 This face is just cool... To much caffeine I guess..

You can get a publiation of the band scores for a bunch of Bebop songs called the Cowboy Bebop Band Score. Not sure where you can get it at, try Google. BTW, the name "Bebop" wasn't just to sound cool. If you think about how the show plays out storytelling-wise and compare it to, say, a Bird solo, they follow the same form. So Cowboy Bebop is basically a visual bop improvisation.

Do you have more of the Cowboy Bebop Scores?

I have the offiicial Cowboy Bebop band score, which includes Tank!, Rush, Space Lion, Memory, Cats on Mars, and the Real Folk Blues, and, if anyone is interested, I might be persuaded to post the alto saxophone solo in the official score. Don't get too excited though; the solo uses very high notes on the saxophone. It goes as high as A.

PaulNYC

Rush is also cool.

is the alto sax part writen when he repeats? i think he just improvs over it because i cant seem to follow it.

The solo isn't properly written out because the people who arranged the score were lazy asses and didn't want to take the time to transcribe the second half of the solo. Or maybe there was a size limitation on the score. If they did a different sax part on the second half they would have to rewrite everything and that would have taken up quite a bit of space. Who knows?

Yes, rollen's post does contain the exact same piece as I have. I had assumed that it was an incomplete transcription I had seen before because it was the most widely distributed transription on the internet. I did not mean to steal anyone's thunder. So, kudos to rollen for taking the time to scan it and distribute it to fellow Cowboy Bebop fans.

I just moved into a new place and my house mate heard me practicing jazz and handed me this CD saying "this has some really good jazz on it" and I was thinking "yeah, right --- an anime sountrack -- I'm sure it's gonna have some great jazz on it". Was I ever surprised -- not only the jazz but the great blues harp and bottleneck guitar. I like the whole CD a lot! I just logged on here and was going to leave a post along the lines of "you gotta hear this ... " but I did a search first and I see a bunch of you already know about it.

(I'm probably the only 50 year old guy in this thread? -- hehe)

Well, I'm 45. And a bit of an insomniac. So cruising through the television channels one night about 2:30am I passed by the cartoon network and just happened to catch Tank!, the opening theme to Cowboy Bebop. My initial thought was, wow, that sounds like a Lalo Schifrin TV score (think Mannix and Mission Impossible). In addition to the DVD's of the series, there's also a 4-CD box set of the music that Yoko Kanno composed for the series.

I think the mp3 that s2e119 got from www.jazz-sax.com is an arrangement by Eric Dannewitz, who runs that site. PDFs of the score and parts used to be available for download from the site, and I think (but don't remember absolutely) that the lead alto part contained a transcription of the solo.

Goes to show you, sometime music can be found in the strangest places. Most sound bites like what is used in cowboy bebop are very limited and often the part you here is the better part of the song. Unlike those Yokko Kano really went out to write the song instead of a song for the series. I find it amazing how the music she composed transition from big band to the lone harmonica and bongo drums or the lone Trumpet. She has great diversity and I really wish she would branch out and actually try to realise some music straight for those music lovers out there so she can tap more then just the anime bunch and those who are lucky enough to be friends with someone who's heard of her(or the show). Kinda makes you wonder what else is out there hiding.

hi there,
as luck would have it, I started arranging Tank for a big band. It's really not that hard, you just have to figure out the chords and such.

The big problem is how to make it longer, and I don't know how I'm going to do that.

My marching band actually played Tank! as a stand tune. A friend of mine arranged it for a band. I also have two arrangements for a Jazz band; one does not include the solo and the other had a somewhat written copy of the solo (in other words, the transcriber tried to write the solo with no improv). There is an official publication with Tank! and the other songs my Yoko Kanno out there. You might be able to find it. Also, this song and two others by her are my favorite. One of the others, Rush, I had the sheet music for, but I am unable to find Too Good Too Bad. I tried arranging it, but I'm not that great at arranging rythems and chords. If you have the sheet music or part of it, please e-mail me at skg87@email.com.

Well as everyone knows that I claimed on August 4th of 2004 that I owned a copy of the score to TANK! from the cowboy bebop theme song. Well I would like to tell everyone that since being around 2 years ago, I have lost it since then and apologize for not posting sooner, please disregard my previous post and hopefully you find the score to TANK! one day. Because it is actually amazing. I just don't have it anymore. :):space5: :space5: :space5: :space5: :space5: :space5: :space5: :space5: :space5: :space5: :)

Hi, I've been searching for a score to this tune for so long now I've almost given up.... All the links I find are broken.
If anyone can help me lay my hands on a quality score for this tune that would rock.

i believe the score on www.jazz-sax.com (although you have to register) is definitely still there. I just downloaded the full thing a couple days ago. The full alto solo is there (even the ending of the song) and it is orchestrated for a full jazz band. I might be able to scrounge it up off the computer if you send me an email... saxmaniac1987 *at* yahoo.com

There were some on anime-sheets.something but the site is down and I lost all my stuff in a computer crash.

Here is a great FanPage: http://www.thebluecrow.com/

Hey guys, I have yet to see an EXACT transcription or something even close to Honda's solo on Tank! on the internet. I know, the "solo" transcription is out there, but any leads given always either lead to a dead end/dead link, or they lead to a transcription that does not match what Honda plays.

I am really interested if anyone knows where to look - I know, this seems to be a recurring question within certain circles all over the internet - but I am wondering if anyone can really give me a lead to find the exact solo played on Tank! I have always wanted to learn it, and I really wish that I could find it on the web somewhere. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Nate

In the link below you will find some transcriptions of some of Yoko's songs. Most are for the piano, but included are Tank, What Planet Is This?, and Rush. Tank includes Full sax section, 1-4 Trombone, 1-4 Trumpet, Rhythm section with Aux Percussion and Piano transcription. What Planet is This? does not have the piano transcription, but does include the rest of the sections. And Rush transcription includes Guitar, Drums, bass, Sax, Trombone and Trumpet.
