I need a second sax that I can take with me everywhere and not have to take my YTS 23 which im afraid to damage. I have been out of the loop on saxes for a while. Other than the expensive ones and Antigua winds I dont know what is good. I found one of these jupiters for sale in pretty good, if not near new condition. Im thinking ill offer the guy like 250 bucks and see what he says. What do you guys think? not worth the money?

I would get a vintage buescher, conn, etc. and use the yamaha as a beater horn.

never. My first horn will stay with me for the rest of my life and will always be my most treasured possession.

Well, the yamaha 23 is not a great horn. You can keep it for sentimental value and certain outdoor gigs, but a good buescher or conn will play a hundred times better than the yamaha. I made the transition last year from a yamaha 23 to a conn Chu and the difference was stunning. The chu had a rich, dark sound and the tone could stay nice and thick even into the upper register.

I never suggested you get rid of the yamaha, I'm just saying that you might want to look into a higher quality horn to use as your main horn, making the yamaha your backup. You could probably get a decent buescher for about the same as (or maybe less than) a Jupiter.

I support entirely what Dirty said. Sentimental value is something I understand but it's plenty of saxes which play easier and with better tone than the YTS23. You can keep that as the sax you learnt on, but for 800 to 1000 you can get great deals on Ebay which will probably suggest you, after some blows, to shift the Yamaha to the beater role.

I think you guys are right. I will have to start saving. Maybe I will spend the money I earn from this summer job on a new sax.
