I am in the process of putting together a band, but I wanted to start putting a few songs together. I have quite a few ideas in my head and want to get them on paper or at least put some kind of structure to it.
Here is how I was thinking of tackling the situation...
1. Record the melody as I hear it in my head on the computer or minidisc recorder.
2. Go back over the melody for hours with the keyboard trying to find the notes to what I sung/hummed (melody will be played by the sax primarily, exceptions with solos, etc...)
3. Figure out what chords will work along with the melody (hardest part for me. The songs will primatily be jazz and the only chords I know are the major and minors, but I can always look up some.)
4. Figure out how I want the bass line to go.
5. Put everything on paper (may be even more difficult)
My band will consist of a sax player (myself), drums, bass, keyboard (still looking for a player), and maybe guitar eventually. I feel like I might be getting in over my head, but it doesn't sound too bad once I understand the basics. I have a vision and a sound in my head, but just got to know how to get it out. I won't be going to college for music for another year (still working full time and going to finish my gen eds at a community college), so I won't have that formal training for awhile.
Any help, suggestions, etc would be great.
