Does anyone have any ideas on where to find one? Or is there another neck that might work for one? Any information is greatly appreciated.
Kritavi,
what vintage is your alto? I have an SDA (early 70s I think)and can try some necks (I have other altos I can swap necks with) and let you know if any would fit. Alternatively, try a well stocked shop and try Yani, Yamaha, Keilwerth and Selmer, etc. they all make replacement necks for their current models, so they're reasonably priced. I heard on the old forum of players having success with the Yani necks on some vintage models. I bought a couple of saxes with no neck or badly damaged neck, but voted against the custom made ones because they cost a lot more than what I payed for the body!
From the type of sound I get on my SDA, I would go for a dark (copper?) type neck. That is if you wish to retain a similar sound to the original SDA, if you're not bothered and just going for intonation, you may have more choice. Also don't discount the fact that a good tech will be able to adapt the bore of the neck to your SDA body. Hope this helps.
Cheers, mmm

Thanks MMM, I appreciate the info. This SDA is around #6000. It may end up getting sold as-is as a restoration project on ebay. I seem to be up to my ears in Buffet altos these days, I own 2 Dynactions and have another Super about to be fully repadded (with brass Resotechs). I love how the Dynactions play although unlike you I use them for a brighter sound.
Just saw Jon Raskin of the Rova Sax Quartet playing his SDA alto hes had for a long time and wow did he sound incredible.
Kritavi,
let me know if you want to sell the SDA...my email is miles61@fsmail.net, I may want to take it on!
Cheers,
mmm
