The revised G1 neck (tenor) is on it's way to me. I should be able to evaluate it in a week or so.

On a related note, I'm having a revised G1 alto neck shipped out to me. I'll also be posting the results here on the forum.

I have a sax with the new neck...I just got it today. It seems fine. The only thing is the soldering (did I spell that right? :S) seems a bit cruddy on the underside. ProWinds said it was the revised neck...

Hi,
From Yamaha I just received two revised/fixed G1 necks for my two YTS-62II tenors I bought a couple of months ago. The necks are great and play in tune like they should. I sold my old 62 tenors and bought the new ones so I could get the more open G1 neck, the improved blue steel springs, and improved octave key receiver. I also have an F1 neck, and I must say, I like the ability to put the differnet Custom necks on my tenors. And... I understand why Saxboy likes the F1 neck. It has a tighter, focused, strong sound. The G1 is very open, especially in the upper register, which takes some getting used to, but is great once you have ajusted to it. I like using the F1 neck for more section work. I hope this helps to put everyone's fears to rest regarding the suppossed new horn problems. It was the G1 neck, NOT the horns which were out of tune. So feel free to order away if you are in the market for a new Yamaha saxophone.

Jedi... do the new 62's have the stack key adjustments like the old ones? For that matter, I dont even know if the 82z has that feature ... I know the 875's do not.

Hi Brian,
If you mean the small ajusting screws, which were also a standard with the original 62... Yes the 62II has the same feature, as well as the 82Z. The 62II is the same great horn as the original with some cool improvements. For people who have the original 62.... that is still a great horn. The G1 neck can be altered to fit the old 62.

I bought a 62II from USA Horn recently and then returned it. I didn't feel it was nearly as "ballsy" a horn as the 62 I owned during the 80's. I wish I had a brand new one of that vintage.

Hi Morry,
My feeling was the opposite in regards to sound. I felt the YTS-62II played slightly fuller than my old 62, and sorry to say, I liked it better than the un-lacquered 82Z I had for a month. I had other necks around, so tuning was not a problem. I had an old 62 a new 62II, a 82Z, and a 1962 Buescher 400, all in tenor. Though the Buescher's sound was killer, I prefered the new YTS-62II the best. The ability to easily put different Yamaha Custom necks on the new 62II really sold me in the end. I never realized how much a neck can change the sonic charactor of a horn.

Morry, you can get a "new" old model 62 at saxophones.co.uk for around $1,272. Such a deal!

I received the revised G1 neck on Monday. My pro musician mentor put it through paces yesterday and gave it complete thumbs up with respect to correcting the intonation problem in the upper register. I should point out that the problem seems to have been the octave hole placement. When I placed the original and revised necks side-to-side, it appears that the hole is perhaps 1/4" closer to the mouthpiece end on the revised neck.

your older neck is just shorter.

Brice-
I lined up the original and revised neck. There is no doubt that they changed the position of the octave hole on the revised neck.

Hi,
I was just wondering exactly how far the octave hole should be from the mouthpiece on a revised G1 neck. I purchased a 62II tenor and i'm not sure whether or not i have a faulty neck because i just recently switched from playing alto and i know that it could be my technique. Any help in this would be much appriciated.
Thanks
Dan

Call Yamaha in Grand Rapids, MI and speak with their warranty dept and give them the serial number of your sax. I can not tell you the measurement difference because it is so slight yet clearly perceptible. You simply need to call or e-mail Yamaha and find out about your G1 neck.

I just went through the process of getting a new neck for my YTS-62II. By all means, call Yamaha in Grand Rapids,MI as advised and ask to speak with Kurt Witt. He was great, took the serial# of my sax and had a new G1 neck sent to me within a week. It plays so much better, the old neck on mine was 2/3 sharp above high C(just as everyone has been saying). With the new neck, perfect tone. Also noticed an improvement in high Bb, which had been somewhat stuffy on the old neck. I haven't heard of that as a generalized problem, though. Anyone else have that problem with the old neck?

MRC, did they have you send back the old neck?

Saxy-
Yamaha reads our posts-I know this for a fact because one of their fellows told me so in an e-mail. At any rate, you will be asked to return one of the necks. I just returned the flawed original. Be sure to save the box and packing material from Yamaha to facilitate return of one of the necks!

Well I would like them to tell me why the soldering is visible if they read this forum... ;)

Was there other things the faulty G1 neck did to the horn. I know the higher registers are sharp...but I'm also having lots of problems thickening the tone, and I just can't seem to have the reed in the right place. Middle D also hase like a nasty vibration to it.......

could be your Lakey mouthpiece, try something more larger chamber-wise like a Link etc. Have you tried with other pieces?

Great News! I called Yamaha about my tenor sax neck. A technician called me back and we indeed discovered that my neck was the faulty one. He asked me what my seral number was, i said 102xx, he said wow, we started shipping out the good necks at 10294. So if you have a YTS 82Z before the serial number 10294, you most likely have the faulty neck. One way to tell if you have the revised neck is to check the saddle on the neck. There should be a dot on the bottom part of it if it is the revised. My new neck should be here in three days.

Thanks for the advice DEzzeg....I was thinking that it could be my mouthpiece because it's very bright. I play a lakey on my alto with no probs, I did try a link, but been so used to blowing on hard rubber mouthpieces that i found it difficult to play mouthpieces with much larger openings...i gotta get used to it.....

Lucky you...I emailed Yamaha two and a half weeks ago about my faulty G1 neck. Kurt said they had necks ready to go and asked me to fax my receipt for my original neck to him, so I rushed out in a thunderstorm and faxed it right away.
A week later I emailed him to ask when it was shipped. They were just getting around to sending it out! They said it would go out that day or the next morning.
Now, a week and a half later and I'm still waiting on the neck. I emailed Yamaha again today, and they're checking on it.

Update: the guys at Yamaha can't find any record of ever shipping a new neck to me, so they sent one out today. It's scheduled to arrive Friday.

...and it did NOT arrive today like it was supposed to. Let's hear it for Yamaha!

When they shipped my revised neck, I asked Yamaha for the UPS tracking number and then you can call UPS toll-free or track the delivery of the item online.

It turns out the Yamaha guys didn't put the condo number on the package, so Brown wouldn't deliver it. It's been sitting at the UPS facility for the past four days now, waiting for me to come claim it.
UPS sent me a post card saying, "By the way, we have a package for you..." I wonder how the post card got to me when the neck could not!

I finally got my neck, and it rocks!
Anybody playing a Custom who is considering buying a new Yamaha should try changing the neck first. My sound has improved, and I didn't have to get used to the feel of a different horn.

Yea...the new neck really made the difference...I still haven't played a horn this accurate in intonation (now that it has the revised) and response!! High notes scream, low notes really pour.....couldn't be happier....
