I've been playing on a metal Meyer 8J for a while now and have really been liking it, I'm just wondering if anyone has played on one of these pieces because I've never seen them discussed before.

I too use a metal meyer 8J (on alto), and I really like the piece. I had no complaints with it until i came up to Potsdam, where it's really friggin cold and dry (-20 good enough for you? :P ) Now it feels a bit inconsistant, esp. compared to my good old C*(which too is metal, classical).
Im saving up to get a new HR piece...probably a Morgan, as all i have now is metal. I sold my Vandy V5 when i got the C*, i have a Link 8* which is a bit too open and bright, and a Java A45 which i dearly loved, but unfortunately it disappered. :(

The metal Meyers play pretty well. I prefer the hard rubber.

How would you characterize the sound of your 8J? Is it bright, dark, med-dark, etc. What does the baffle profile look like?

Thanks!

I keep a Meyer 7J, 8J and 9J in my case and, with Bari reeds on hand, I've got most every situation covered! They have enough edge and body for most kinds of jazz, pop & R&B.

I have a Meyer metal 8J tenor piece. Very nice piece.

Sounds good! I have a 9J on the way from WW&BW that I'll give a shot.

Well, I almost had a metal Meyer! WW&BW send a gold plated 6M instead of the 9J.

Actually, the gold-plated 'M' series plays better than the nickel-plated 'J' series Meyers. The 'J's are quite a bit brighter.

Yeah, I agree with 'I saxman'. At least tenor M-series play much better than J's. I have test played both and didn't like the 'J's.

Actually I played for awhile on a gold plated 8M. On one '82 recording session I did all the ensemble parts using a RIA Aluminium 7 but the solos I did using this 8M. Nice sound, not too thin. Very well in tune, but maybe too bland by today's standards.
An interesting point is that a spoiler for Jody Jazz hardrubber/plastic mpc fits into it giving an option for a little more colorful sound.

However, nowadays I prefer the HR 10M I accidentally bought secondhand. A very well playing piece, especially on Vandoren ZZ's. Might be a carefully selected one, maybe from late 70's or early 80's . Definitely not a muscular 'contemporary' mpc, but a very musical one and easy to play. A keeper, as they say.

The metall Meyer's seem to be just the usual babbit stuff. Resemblance with Guy Hawkins and Wolfe Tayne pieces is more than obvious.

But maybe the Meyer M's are the most tolerable of them all.

Well well, perhaps I am a little too picky.

For situations where you have to compete with loud guitars these high baffle 'J's could be just the right thing.
On alto the results might be quite 'killing'.

My own sound is built on the Coltrane basis, so these high baffle pieces are definitely too breckerish for me.
