I don't know a lot regarding the history of the Sumner Acousticut mps, but they were around in the 1950-60's, and quite a few classic tenor players were using them. There was also a nice ligature with them that worked very well ( nickel or some type of material with black screw heads). I think that the company was purchased by Robert Black (Saxophone Shop-Evanston, Ill) by the 70's and was producing stencil mps and making reeds (also Acousticut). I have a couple of pieces that were made by Wolf Tayne or some other company for Sumner brand. Before that, he was using a combination of designs produced by Babbitt. Don't know what's happening recently. :D

I just worked on a Sumner Accousticut Alto 4. It was nicked up and needed to be opened up. I did not notice anything special about the facing before I reworked it. I has a med-large chamber with concave side walls. Nice vintage hard rubber material.

I own several Sumner pieces.
I have a #3 and a #6 for alto, a #8 tenor, and a #6 bari.
The tenor piece is similar to a vintage HR Link. It's my fave jazz m/p on tenor.
I use the #3 alto piece from time to time for concert band playing. The #6 is on loan to a friend of mine right now. It's a great piece, but my Vandoren A35 serves me well as an all round alto piece.
