Brass Boat Hook For Neckstrap

I have a Hyman neckstrap and years ago I took the clip out and put in a small brass boat hook w/a spring loaded clip. The theory behind doing this is that the brass is softer on the hook than the sax, and will wear before the sax strap ring does. Well, after years of playing I finally had to replace it. The bottom of the ring was worn halfway through! It looks great too.
Has anyone else here tried this?

After I almost dropped my horn a couple of times, I started looking for a replacement hook for my Planet Waves strap. After experimenting with several ideas, I spotted a brass snap hook in a marine chandlery.

As you suggest Cam, it works well and looks great; the sacraficial aspect is an added bonus.
