The local music shop informed me that they can get a Jupiter 767 Alto Sax in Black Lacquer for me direct from Taiwan. I have done some research on WWBW and the Jupiter website itself but don't seem to see any black lacquer models. Does anyone know anything about this? The price is quite good also, arond USD$880.

Thanks.

For a few dollars more, you might be happier with a Jupiter Artist series 869SG alto because it has received excellent reviews by owners whereas the 767 has not. I owned two Jupiter 889SG tenors and they were very fine insturments (SG translates to silver body and gold keys). At least check out the differences between the Jupiter Artist series and the eariler/lower models before you plunk down nearly $900. And, if at all possible, try before you buy.

I am more interested in the Artist series actually but the local shop didn't know anything about it even after consulting with Taiwan. That's why I was a bit confused and I didn't put down any orders. I have tried a Jupiter 5xx tenor (can't remember the model number) which is silver in colour at the same shop but I kinda like the sound that I am getting so that's why I like the Jupiter. I recall that it is a student model, right?

Since Jupiter's 787GL is considered their intermediate level tenor, I guess it safe to conclude the 5xx is a student model and the 889SG is considered their pro-level horn.

From one being sold on eBay out of Australia, the following is described:
"THE 585GL...CONSIDERED TO BE A SUPERIOR QUALITY STUDENT MODEL."

Go to a different shop.

The artist model is a bit fancier with the silver, but the alto 767 is an excellent horn. I own one. In my opinion, it's a professional horn. It has its peculiarities, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a make or model that doesn't. With the right combination of horn/reed/player/ this horn is about as good as they come.

I have to admit that I like the looks of the Artist and the silver neck seems to produce a different quality from its lacquered brass counterpart. The black lacquer looks cool too.

I've seen 769BL which is the same as 767 except in black not gold.
It's not listed on the website but look up ozqwinds on google and it will turn up some stuff.
I opted for the P.Mauriat Le Bravo, but that might be out of your price range.

A good 767 is a great horn. Unfortunately, a lot of them suck. I had to climb over a pile of crap altos to find the good one I have. I would never buy one sight unseen without a VERY liberal return policy.

You can get a silver (or at least silver bell and neck) 767...

...but you would have to pry it away from me. As far as I know, it's the only one out there with a silver bell, and gold-over-silver neck and inner bell. It has been through many variations getting to this point. For a while the neck and bell were bare brass, then white bathtub enamel, then blue metallic paint over the enamel (inner bell bare in both cases), and finally silver and gold.

It's nearly four years later now and plenty more competition for Jupiter, I wonder what the OP bought?

Mal just wanted an excuse to make me drool over his 767 again. That is just the coolest-looking horn.

(And I agree with him on the 767's. I got one for a song, and it was head and shoulders above the four other "student" grade altos I've owned. No idea why.)

Allow me to strip the lacquer off a 767 that doesn't look like a scratching post and I could do a lot better. I wasn't willing to buff out the rather serious corrosion gouges, so they are still visible through the silver. They shouldn't get any WORSE from now on, but they'll never go away either.

Boiling in a spaghetti pot is a fine way to get lacquer off -- at least for things small enough to fit. I just did it with the (also badly corroded) neck of my YTS-21 last night, and followed that up with silver.
