famous jazz bassist dies at age 58. played with a who's who of stars from Miles,Oscar peterson,Dexter Gordon, and the list goes on and on. found this in the New York times but a little short on details. at one time he was the bassist in the 60's and 70's in Europe and with American jazz artists. must have played hundreds of recordings because i have quite a few with him. a great improvisor and technique that was perfect with a big woody sound. so long Great Dane yuo had a great run.

Another sad loss. I'm remembering his playing, and dug out Shepps " Looking At Bird"...with NHOP on it. All Bird tunes duo. I listen to this and wonder what has happened to jazz. Records like this I used to buy and sit and enjoy for days on end. NHOP is on some Lockjaw stuff and Griff I have and he was solid and cookin'.

His style was a school of groove and burn, that just made it.

What has happened to the cool duos?? And the spots/clubs that had them. EG- " Bradleys" in NyC. I could name 12 more that had duos and employed great bass/piano players. I dunno, guys like Ron McLure, Buster Williams, Cecil McBee,Ray Drummond, Brian Torff ( a GREAT NHOP fan , btw ) on thru the pianists. Holy gawd everyone shouldn't have to teach and play pits and shows. lol

What happened to being a......MUSICIAN??

NHOP was young. Very sad and a loss to the music.

So sad.
Met him first time in 67.
We played the same night in the same club at a jazz festival. He was a member of Ben Webster's quartet, with Kenny Drew and Albert Heath.
He was so young then...
Saw him several times during 70's.

I've heard him on some occasions and he is one of two bassists that really made an impression to me. The other one is Reggie Workman. The first time I heard NHØP was when playing duo with Swedish guitar player Ulf Wakenius. It was totally awesome. It must have been in the early 1990. 1993 perhaps?

I have moved to another apartment and I stumbled on a obituary in the local newspaper when I was wrapping some glasses in paper. Freely translated...

Denmark has lost one of its foremost jazz musicians. The world famous Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen has died at an age of 58. The virtuoso NHØP took bass playing to new heights and in Denmarks he founded a tradition of musicians in the area. NHØP made his breakthrough in the 60s and during his career he played with a lot of Greats. He recorded with Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans and Dexter Gordon to name a few.
For several years he played with the Oscar Peterson Trio and he also played for many years with the Danish Radio Big Band and other constellations. Among the many awards he received during his 40 year long career is the Nordiska Rådets Musikpris (The Nordic Council) 1990.
NHØP started out playing the piano, but his friend Ole Kock showed more promise so when they would form a band NHØP switched to bass, which noone regretted. He was thirteen when he took up the double bass, and at fourteen he was working professionally. At the age of fifteen the rumours about his talent started to spread and at age and at seventeen he was invited to join Count Basie's orchestra. The two friends kept on playing together and also lived as neighbours in Copenhagen.
NHØP died, on April 19th, in his home, from a heart failure.

So sorry to hear this. He was a phenomenal bass player.
I saw him just last summer with Oscar Peterson. This is a definite loss for jazz.
