I just had to post this, after 2 years I think its been on trying most every brand of tenor mouthpiece, some more than once. I believe I'm on the road to recovery with a modified Barone Hollywood. Could be the change of horns that set me straight. The point being, if you have a piece you like but just a little something missing, try sending it out for a touch up/reface/blueprint or whatever you want to call it. SML Rev. D circa 1955 and this Barone opened to .107 from .105 helped me get a Demo CD done to the point that our band has been picked up from a private source to FUND our CD, studio time, packaging and promoting. Anyway, I'd like to think it was part of my doing, you know how guitar players are!!. ;)

Hey Bodhi!
How long have you been playing the Hollywood, and who tweaked it for you?

I too have a Barone Hollywood 8 Tenor - had it for 4 years, great piece.
But the best mouthpiece is always your next one!

You're a lucky man. I only make about 100 Hollywoods a year so they're pretty rare. If you get the craving to switch again, call me first. I'm fairly good ay making adjustments to my own mouthpieces. Phil

I've been busy woodsheding!! I've been playing the Hollywood for about 2 months I think. I kept one other mouthpiece around just in case I dropped this one but have never put it on the horn. Gigging about twice a week for the past couple months and couldn't be happier with it. As to who refaced it, I got this piece from a good friend who uses his own refacer, he told me who he was but I don't remember nor do I really need to...I've had pieces by Mojo and Doc, I wouldn't hesitate to go back to either one of them to do a reface on this piece if needed. ;)

I have played a Barone Hollywood 8* for the past 4 years and I am very satisfied with its' response and tone. I talked to Phil recently and he stated that when making a mouthpiece for Bob Sheppard, he kept wanting to make it darker and yet keep it responsive. There is only so dark you can go and keep it responsive. I tried this model and against two New York Barone 8 pieces and the Hollywood felt the best. I did not find much tone variation between the NY and the Hollywood, though the Hollywood is suposedly darker.
Reference 54 tenor.

I bought a Hollywood 8 from Phil in December 1999. Since then I have bought several more mouthpieces, but I keep coming back to the Hollywood. If I could only have one mouthpiece it would be the Hollywood. It plays beautifully with my Mark VI, my Series III, and my vintage Buescher.
I've been using my newer Phil Barone Contemporary 8* for rock and electric blues. Lately, though, I'm thinking about trying the Hollywood with a Plasticover the next time that I perform.
