I need some info on a composer

My band teacher says that i need to find out what the writer of the song wanted the peace to say or something like that , he said this when i asked for help on my solo.

The solo is for Solo and Ensemble the name of the song is Sonatina writen by J. Haydn. My teacher said to look the stuff up on the net and I can not find any thing :!:

So can any one help me :?:

Stephanie, it's probably Franz Josef Haydn. You shouldn't have any trouble finding biographical information on him. Just run a web search on the full name.

FYI, if you need specific information on the Sonatina, you'll need to know which Sonatina number it is and which instrument it was written for. Your sheet music should have this written on it. There's not just one Sonatina by him.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding. Are you looking for biographical information on Haydn? If so, my Google search came up with ten pages of references. So, I guess my question is either what specifically are you trying to find or, do you know how to do an internet Google search? Not being condescending; just want to help but obviously there's a disconnect.

p.s.Stephanie...what does it say on the music itself? Full composer's name, date it was written, what instrumentation, what Sonatina number is it? If this information is not on your music, then, if there is a full conductor's score, it should be there. Ask your teacher for it tomorrow.

on the music it says the name Sonatina under that is says "based on trio V"
it is for an Eb Alto Saxophone
and on the side it says J. HAYDN under that is says "Transcribed by H. Voxman

that looks like all the info that is on the music

i have been looking on yahoo and every thing and i have not found any thing on this peace. i have look up J. HAYDN and found a lot of stuff on him do not get me wrong but all the sites i have been on i did not even see the peace's name there :!:

OK, Stephanie, this should get you to the next step with your teacher.
First, read the biographical information on the website that singlereed linked you to. Please note that Joseph Haydn and Franz Josef Haydn (1732-1809) are the same person.

On the same web site, you will see a list of works. You should also know that there were not saxophones in Haydn's time, so the trio you're playing is adapted from a work for another instrument.

When you read that list you will see that Haydn wrote 126 trios for Baryton (not Baritone voice or Baritone horn, but an obsolete stringed instrument with 6 or 7 strings for bowing and another bunch for plucking), Violin or Viola, and Cello and he wrote 40 for Piano, Violin or Flute, and Cello. There may be more trios for other instrumental combinations.

Since your information says Trio V, and if there is only a Trio V for the first group of trios and only one trio V for the second group, that would be a good place to start looking. But then, of course, you've got to find the originals and I doubt that you've got the resources to do that kind of research, or at least, I doubt that kind of research is what your teacher had in mind.

So if I were you, I would get some biographical information, and summarize the information above for your teacher and ask him what he would like to do next.

By the way. To help you out in the future, do you have the "Google" search machine integrated into your web browser? If you're using Internet Explorer, you should. If you use another browser like I do, you can still download Google and have it available for doing web searches.

After you figure out which piece you are expected to write about, and after you have exhausted your resources trying to find a quote from Haydn about the work in question, do what the teacher probably expects you to do: listen to the sonatina. Try to get a score of the arrangement which you listen to and write your own interpretation of what Haydn intended to express.

You are unlikely to find much in the way of DIRECT quotes from the composer, but rather much from music critics positing their own opinions. Even if you find enough quotes, go the extra mile and use examples from the sonatina to support what the composer has said about his own work. If you depend upon critics, either take issue with the critic or agree in order to support your thesis.
