Alan Greenspan accepted another term as head of the US Federal Reserve Bank yesterday. Greenspan is a Julliard grad who traveled on the road as a tenor player. According to a story in the New Yorker, Greenspan helped prepare tax returns for the guys in the band, found he had an inclination for economics, and decided to pursue a different career. No information is available regarding whether Mr. Greenspan is available for gigs, his personal set up, or his opinion on the best serial numbers to look for on a MKVI.

I suspect Alan is old school and would prefer a Cigar Cutter or SBA. :D

I guess we could clasify that as an interesting choice for doubling. I see why he had to get out of music.

I'm sure that whatever horn Mr. Greenspan hinted was his favorite, would have its value increase by 1/4 of a point.

I'll bet his favorite tune was "We're In The Money."

I wonder if he still has his sax and does he give it a toot every now and then? You know, to keep his chops in shape. Just in case the economy goes sour.

You know, there's that old saw about how a gentleman in Scotland is someone who knows how to play bagpipes, but doesn't -- and in Germany it's someone who knows how to play accordian, but doesn't --
Well, a gentleman just doesn't know how to play banjo!!

That seems to be a common belief amongst deaf americans in regard to instruments of the african continent.

They called Clinton a "sax player" too... PLEASE, I don't call that playing. They'd barely take that guy in a Jr. High band.
banjo-what a poor excuse for an............ instrument?
Hey, there ain't nothin' like good banjo pickin'!

I actually had to play a tenor chart last summer that called for doubling on banjo, so apparently Mr. Greenspan isn't the only one. Since I didn't have time to run down to the local banjo shop, I faked it on tenor. It gave me a good chance to perfect my twang tounging technique.

Don't forget our man at the Fed, Al, is a Juilliard grad. Even if he's out of practice my bets on him over Willy in a cutting contest....

News to me. I didn't know he played. He's got a nice sax background for sure, but his soulchops could be low. Maybe change his name to Saxspan, some serious wood sheddin, (when % rate's a really low) he'd get lot's of gig's right in Washington. Tips and food included. Bill'd be jazz'y jealous

Bill would run! Or make up  a story. His lip hurt's, Hillary took his horn away, it's in the shop...
...the Smithsonian won't give it back...
(I'm sure he has others, but it'd be a good excuse if he wanted one...)

Clinton got a least one free tenor when he was in office. I've got a picture of it somewhere. So he has no excuse to not show up for a contest with Greenspan.

Years back I saw a local interview on Houston tv featuring Everette Harp, who had been a regular "sit in" (every Thursday night) on the Arsino Hall show. Turns out that the saxophone that Bill played at his inauguration, he borrowed from Everette. When asked what Everette thought of Clintions playing, Everette just smiled and said "well lets just say he's the best presidential sax player we've had yet". "Hot chops, cool chops, even if it's old chops, it's still Rockn' Roll to me" You got Sonny Rollins chops, 8) and then there's Bill Clinton chops. You know, like a broad spectum. Big Al's probably somewhere in between.

Crazy Al was said to have decent chops, a fine reader, doubled splitreeds and yes, kept the books for the band. What he wasn't was a jazz player - strictly a utility man. His heyday was around 1945, when he was actually on one of the earliest bebop big bands in NY (ergo anywhere!) - Henry Jerome's orchestra. Greenspan also supposedly worked with Herman's 1st Herd for a very short time - the 4th chair swapping back and forth between him, Jimmy Giuffre, and ultimately, Serge Chaloff.
(All the above I learned from an interview with Pres. Nixon's White House counsel, Leonard Garment, no mean reedman himself, and a fellow member of that Jerome band. )

Media Lint; I'm a bit confused; perhaps you can explain to me how Thomas' comment about banjo being a poor excuse for an instrument, makes him a deaf American, and how exactly you were able to infer that he dislikes all African instruments. I like your posts a lot. You seem to have plenty to add to our lively discussion here, but what's up with this? Have a bad day or what?

They used to call him Hotlips Greenspan. That, of course was just his stage name. His real name was Hotlips Freeberg.

Can you define "define"?
I did not play music on that sax. Can you define "play"?
So all I need, as a long-suffering, often-insulted player of a Mark 7 alto sax, is for Greenspan to strongly endorse the Mark 7 as "even better than a Mark 6: 16.67% better, in fact", and then MY horn will be worth $4k-$5k too? Excellent...
Alan may or may not be old school and prefer a Cigar Cutter sax. However, I'm pretty certain the Cigar Cutter is Bill's favorite model.
Then again, who am I to criticize? After all, I like the Mark 7!!!
