I'm notoriously undersmart about these things so I figured I'd check to see if any of the SOTW gang knew more. This was on ebay recently: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2505746713&category=16 234. I've never heard of this stencil before. Is this really a Keilwerth? Does anyone inderstand the relationship to Ponzel? Pete? Steve G? Sarge? Anythoughts?

Not a bad looking horn but sure hate to get serious then find it's made in czechoslovakia.

Apologies in advance if this should have gone in marketplace or buying/selling.

I looked it over and it doesn't appear to be a keilwerth to me al all. The keyguards are not the right style. the G# key doesn't have keilwerth imprinted, i see no engraving of the jk/world trademark on the horn, the lower stacks G# closing bar is wrong.
JK has emphatically stated that if there is no JK/world emblem, it is not one of theirs.

The Ponwol keilwerth is the forerunner of the SX90R - instantly recognizable by the "Ponzol" Emblazened acros the front.

I don´t understand the Ponzol connection (its NOT a Ponzol model,I have one so I should know) but it may well be made by Keilwerth.Engraving is very similar to Couf Suberbas and some other details in keywork. If I remember correctly (unlikely  ) H.Genet was a JK stencil indeed.

Doesn't look like a Keilwerth at all. The Ponzol tenor is slightly different to the SX90r is bell size although mos tof the keywork is identical. These are great horns to play too.

This horn was made in Nauheim, Germany like Keilwerth but from a different company called Dörfler and Jörka. These people use to work for Keilwerth before they started their own business in 1950 until 1968. A lot of parts are identical because they got their parts from the same manufactures. I guess they even had the same guy doing the engraving.
For the above mentioned reasons this horn is very much Keilwerth influenced.

I posed the same questions to the seller. Here's the response:

"Hi John,

This is Peter Ponzol and this is one of my own personal saxophones. I
thought it was clear from my description that this is a saxophone from
Peter Ponzol. The horn is marked made in germany under the thumb hook.

Most horns Keilwerth made for other customers were not marked JK since the customer did not want it to be known who made it. I assumed that since it is one of my own personal horns it was unnecessary to explain basic things about the horn. Its a great horn with a fresh overhaul that would normally cost $800.00. Thanks.

Best regards,

Peter Ponzol"

Appears that it's Peter himself!

Anyway, thanks to everyone for the input. I can't imagine that Stephan's wrong about the factory/origin but Ponzol says it plays great even though it's not actually JK.

I feel GAS kicking in...

Yep, I agree, the Dörfler and Jörka's are great playing horns and that's what it looks like... I just did a custom repad on a Voss tenor (also a Dörfler and Jörka) for a very good customer and it smoked. I checked the voss tenor pics and it had the same keyguards, etc. too. I think 1200.00 is a great bargain for it.
It's pretty funny how much confusion Peters description and title caused... after all he did call it a "keilwerth from Ponzel" in the auction description!

Somehow I can't imagine that PP has to sell this horn on Ebay if it is such a great player and overhauled for 800 bucks. :?:
