Fluted body on Selmer metal Mpieces

Can somebody tell me why some old Selmer metal pieces have fluted
edges along the outside of the body, and others are smooth.
Are they different ages?
different facings / chambers / values ??

I think the fluted bodies are older?

Does anybody like the Selmer metal Jazz pieces?

Fluted body alto pieces continued into the mid 1960s, and the rounded body pieces were on the market thereafter.
I've not seen a fluted Jazz piece, alto or tenor.
The fluted tenor piece I have is one of the old "art deco" insignia pieces with the wing-like background over which the Selmer logo appears, while the 60-ish tenor piece has only the plain round logo with rounded sides.
