There's a rumor going around that Yamaha will be producing a one-piece bent neck soprano in their 82Z line (similar to the 62R they produced in the 80s).
Anyone hear this or have more info?

Sorry about posting so late on this one. If Yamaha did make a fixed bent neck soprano - I'd buy it in a second. I'm tired of fooling around with these little soprano necks. Particularly at 2 in the morning after a 4 hour club date. Only my opinion. I've been looking for a 62R for months on E-bay and the web with NO luck. Thanks for the post.

I have talked to the Yamaha people here in the US and I can confirm that is a direction they are headed with the 82Z soprano...a one piece soprano with a bent neck.

Yamaha moves V E R Y S L O W !!
I have put my 2 cents in many times and do hope they follow thru with that thought. They never really say much but that was my feel too. Of course that was almost 2 years ago.
If not, it's gonna be Rampone and Cazzani next time.
1 Piece, bent neck = Great Combination that works.

I spoke with Mike Lutley @ the Yamaha Custom Shop and can echo Greg's statement about Yamaha taking their time with this. Mike said that it would be at least a year before they look into producing an 82Z sop. he did confirm that it would be one piece with a curved neck with the weight being similar to the 475.

with the weight being similar to the 475.Jack, please help me understand the implication of that statement. Does that mean it would be lighter than the current 675/875 models?
Thanks.

I believe that the 475 is lighter than the 675/875. I know for a fact that the 675 is lighter than the 875. Maybe Greg would shed more light on this point.
Hope this clears things up.

Jack - I'm pretty sure you're right, although it's hard to keep up lately, with all the changes in models, and model numbers. Seems like the 475 has the 62 (675?) body tube, though. Who knows? In any event, I'll be very interested to see this new horn.

I believe YAMAHA is waiting for Selmer's next move. 82Z are kicking Ref.36 /54's butt. And since the "latest" model of selmer soprano is series III (it's been almost 8+ years), Yamaha probably will not release another new model of sp. until selmer has a new soprano.

I would just be guessing too. I think the 875 got to big and bulky and the feel and weight might be lighter - more like my 62R which is the soprano that shook the sax world.

Any guesses how much this kind of dream would cost?

I vote for 3K! Between the 675 and 875 makes sense to me...... :D

A one-piece straight-neck had better accompany that curved neck release...
