I am curious about this but does anyone know if the various Keilwerth Stencil horns' serial numbers stay in line with the actual Keilwerth serial number?

My initial guess is yes but I am not sure.

I have a Martelle by Keilwerth that if this is true, would place the horn as 1965.

I had a Couf Superba I alto that appeared to be true to its Keilwerth number placing it in the early 80's.

Good Question, it would be nice to know for sure how these are numbered.

FWIW

I have Martelle alto 55xxx, former owner says 1966. Use it as a backup horn; thin pads with cone shaped resonators woke it up nice.

Any guess as to how to pronounce " martelle' "?

Hello zadu
Your martelle seems to be from 1966 regarding to the official Keilwerth serial numbers:

At keilwerth there are no stencil, only 3 models avalable. They engrave the subtitution name, in your case its Martelle for mine it's Champion. So for the serial number it's the same as for the Keilwerth brand name.

Alain , this makes sense. The site, www.saxpics.com shows a picture of a Couf Royalist that looks like the same key style and bell engraving (except for the brand name and the perforations of the key guards) as my Martelle'.

I take the information at keilwerth site(boosey & hawkes) in their forum. There are some very nice information for the old keilwerth model and what we call their stencil.

There's a Martelle alto on the 'bay right now that appears to have a 55xxx serial number which would date it at 1966. This instrument is stamped "made in Germany" in English so is presumably an export model (otherwise it would be in Deutsch, ja?). But in 1966 it should have said made in West Germany, yes? Any ideas?

My DJH modified is an 86xxx. Its in line with the coufs and JK's of that period.
I see this is another ancient thread dug up from its grave! Oh well.

I have a Martelle alto and the serial numbers match the keilwerths verbatim, as far as I can tell.
