With the new 62s shipping with the G1 neck, I was wondering what might be expected from replacing the stock neck on an origninal YTS-62 with a G1? I have few complaints about my 62, but am curious about any possible benefits of changing necks. I guess if anyone has any experience with any of the other Yamaha necks on a YTS-62, I'd be glad to listen.
(I thought about posting this in the "Necks" forum, but I'll give it a shot here first.)
Thanks.
Direct experience with the Custom 875 (origional M1 neck) replaced witha G1 neck. Overall mush better for me.
A good student (college) replaced a 62 neck with a G1 neck. His comments (while I was observing) bigger sound with more depth and highs. Easier to get a lot of air through. I thought it was a definite improvement for him. Can't predict what your reaction would be or if it would be a difference you would prefer.
Is there a store near you where you could test the G1 neck personally? That would be my suggestion. I don't know, but a store like woodwind and Brasswind might send you one to try, with return option if it doesn't suit your needs.
I tried an 875 with the old and new neck. I really made a dramatic difference. It just opened it right up. Much freer blowing.

MS,
The nearest Yamaha dealers are about an hour away, but I have made the trip in the past.
Do you know whether WWBW carries the Yamaha necks? I know that they advertise other brands, but since they are an authorized Yamaha dealer, they should be able to get them, I would think.
Thanks.
I think WWBW may not advertise prices openly, but I'm pretty sure they stock necks. I think you have to call for a price quote. 8) I bought mine through local dealer.
As far as I know they are available in regular lacquer, silver plate, gold plate, and raw brass. Some have mentioned that the raw brass is very lively. I have regular lacquer and haven't tried the other options. Good luck. 8)
I stand corrected regarding WWBW advertising price (see post regarding prices in this section) Thanks pknight! :D
I called both Weiner Music and WW&BW about a week ago, and both said they don't have the G1 neck yet.

Very few of us play the same Mouthpiece that came with the horn because we found one we like better. I have replaced all my necks over the years. Yamaha is the first company I know that has done this much research into necks and created so many options.
You need to keep looking for a neck to try to see for yourself what a huge difference it makes.
The G1 is very free and full. It would sound great on your 62. The F1 is my choice and plays very well for me on an 875 Black Custom. Did not care for the G1 on my 875, but that is the point. We all play different MP's. The necks will be a personal choice too.
As far as finding them...
Retailers that carry MP's will start to get necks as they see the interest and Yamaha is just now creating a real interest, so kkep looking and you will find some here pretty quick.
I have had a worse time finding Bari MP's in LA then finding Yamaha necks for people emailing me.
Good luck!

Saxboy Greg hit it right on the nose. I've played a lot of mouthpieces on my 61 with varying results. Then I tried a Selmer Ref 36 neck on it and a whole new world of possibilities was offered. Fuller highs, fatter lows, and not as "in your face" as the stock neck. Former problem mouthpieces became players. I think it's partially due to the larger bore on the Ref36 neck (.515" but I've heard the Selmers are inconsistent). Takes more air, but I think its similar to the F1 from the samples I've heard.

I play a YTS-82Z with the new G1 neck, plays great, wwbw has the following prices
YAC SN-AG1G Gold Plated G1 Tenor Sax Neck $400.00
YAC SN-AG1S Silver Plated G1 Tenor Sax neck $267.00
YAC SN-TG1GP Gold Plated G1 Tenor(will fit any pro Yamaha sax.$240.80
These are the prices they told me and said they are non refundable because of the special order.
Hope this helps.
I think some things are swapped in the post above. The A or T character is obviously for alto or tenor, and S or G means silver or gold plated. The tenor neck must be the more expensive one.

The $400 tenor neck is an older design for the older models. Quote from email from wwbw "As far as I know they (YAC SN-TG1GP) should fit all horns but were designed for the
new
models."
Look at the differences in the old model silver and gold plated
YAC SN-AG1G Gold Plated G1 Tenor Sax Neck $400.00
YAC SN-AG1S Silver Plated G1 Tenor Sax neck $267.00
Both for Tenor with the "A" but the gold version is $400 and the silver $267.
The numbers are wrong for the older models too. I've seen a Yamaha price list which clearly uses the A for alto and T for tenor. So just be careful on a special order!

Current WWBW advertised price for the YAC SN-TG1S is $419 This is the G1 Tenor neck in silverplate. Yamaha Suggested Retail (MSRP) is $590 for this neck. WWBW price for G1 tenor in lacquer is $319--this as of 2 Feb 2005

I also had the chance to decide between the M1 Custom and the G1 Custom neck.I decided to take the G1 with my tenor 875,that neck definitely had a richer, less resistance,a better sound overhaul.Iam happy with it! It is a personal choice but for myself just loved the G1Custom.

The G1 Custom is a good match for the older 62s as well.
Does anyone know if the G1 neck will fit an older YAS 61 alto? Thanks.
