What kinds of contoured cases actually fit the 6M scince the bell keys and gaurd are on the left hand side? I know one to the large SKB cases fit, but any other brands, the selmer flight cases?, those winter cases in WWBW?
Any advice would be appreciated?
THanks

Hiscox tenor cases fit a 10M perfectly, and I assume the alto case would be great for the 6M. I belive you can find them at junkdude, com.

I appreciate the tip fella's
I use Berkeleys for my 6M and 10M. No complaints.
I'm currently working with a sax friend of mine on recycling an old SKB case, rebuilding it partially, adding foaming and stuff, and customizing it to fit a 10M. This should be an interesting experiement. If it don't work well, I was going to throw away that case anyway. But right now we're debating over the color of the fabric to put on the inside. Faux-Leopard has been brought-up... like I said, this should be interesting
LOL. I think a large black and white cow print would look real good, Kim.

Kim,
I have been thinking about doing a similar "rebuild" project with an old C-melody or tenor case (the countoured kind, that looks alot like the flight cases of today). What kind of foam are you going to use? And how would you cover it with fabric so there aren't any "bunches" where the fabric goes around a corner?
I experimented a little with trying to get a tight fit by covering a sax with plastic, then spraying expanding foam around it so it would conform perfectly to the shape of the sax, but it didn't work very well. The foam is also pretty stiff, like the original foam in the SKB cases. I would rather have a softer foam (like those foam mattresses you can get at the sporting goods stores)
Hi Kevin,
For the foam, I'm keeping the original Styrofoam countoured shape for basic support. One problem I found with that case thru it's previous utilisation was that the countoured shape was too big for the sax. Now that the inside fabric has been removed, it's even larger. So I'm adding on the inside some some softer foam for a tighter fit, espescially in the places where the weight of the sax will be resting on once in the case.
This was an older SKB model that didn't have the an accessory compartment. I had to remove some Styrofoam in the basic contoured shape (I've taken precise measurments of the 10M in question) for the side pads that are on the other side. So there is going to be soft foam over there too.
I've also altered the case; Added 2 mpc slots (to insert mpc vertically instead of horizontally) in an area where the Styrofoam is much thicker and not close to the case's edge rim (as opposed to the previous mpc slot) and I shut the previous slot with some more Styrofoam and hot glue.
Once the old fabric was removed, it was glued in there very strongly, and so, removing the fabric has to be done very carefully to not break the Styrofoam shape too seriously. I checked-out how the fabric was putted on in the first place. You must start on the inside, into every cavities and outward. In some places (like the bell's lip area) you will need to make a slight incision in the fabric and overlap. Don't be affrait to put a lot of glue, espescially on the otward edges. For the mpc slot, just cover it up (having previously put some fabric inside if desired) and then with an exacto knive cut an X where the slot is and overlap on the inside. You must use a fabric that isn't too thin so that the glue doesn't pass through it. Then you just cut off the exceeding fabric all around the case, leaving about .25" and gently tuck that in under the case rim using a thin piece of wood such as a chopstick or something like that.
My case is not completely finished yet. If you want when I'm done I could post pictures here.
Take care
Kim

Kim,
Thanks for the info. It would be great if you could post some pics when you are done, or send them via email koa39@hotmail.com
I am having a Martin sax rebuilt and I thought it would be nifty if I had a vintage, contoured case to go with it....completely custom, of course...heh
Kevin,
Will send you the pics when I'm done. Don't know when exactly, I've got a very "e l a s t i c" sheddule of my time  But I will send you pics, I promiss.
I'm curious... You said that you tried getting a tight fit with spraying some expanding foam. IWhen I first read that I though that's a pretty clever idea. What is it about that that didn't work?
BTW, sorry for my numerous spelling & syntax mistakes in my earlyer post... I shouldn't be typing such long replies before coffee

Kim,
I should probably try the expanding foam idea again, but when I did it before I tried to suspend the saxophone in the gutted case and spray the foam around and underneath the sax. The problem was that it never dried in the areas where air could not reach the foam. I tried it again by just spraying the foam on the sax (not in the case), which means there has to be alot of trimming to get it into the case. One problem was that the foam would only "stand" on itself so much...in other words, some places didn't have enough foam to fit into the case (I suppose I could have added more foam after it had dried). Another problem was that without the case to be used as a backer, the foam didn't push into the crevasses of the sax very well, so it wasn't very form fitting. Maybe some more thought out approaches would fix the problems I had.
I'll be looking for the pics...thanks!
Kevin: Check your email, I've sent you the pics.
For the rest of the curious folks who want to know, We've opted for the Faux-Leopard fabric... Sorry gary, we almost went for the cow print fabric but concluded that white gets dirty quickly.
Kim, can you post a pic or two here for the rest of us?
The case is now at my friend who owns the 10M's place. This coming Wednesday our sax section is having a sectional, so by Thursday I'll have pictures of the case with the sax.
But for now, here's one with just the case...

oooooEEEEEE Woman! You do nice work.
Do you have the pointy, horn-rimmed glasses and long cigarette holder to go with it?
No but our band's new "Uniform" (If we me call that so) consist of taky multicolored flowered shirts, pareos, straw hats, glitter hats, Jester hats, faux-leopard print & cow print cowboy hats, orange, yellow, pink, red boas, flower leis...etc. I'm developping a taste for what's ugly/tacky. If I keep this up, I'm affraid that my fellow band members are gonna be asking me to raise their salary.
But the case is cool no?

THAT's what all that junk is for???? Uh-oh. No photographer this year, OK?
The case is awesome. Even better in person than in the picture. Makes you wish it was a bit bigger so you could curl up and take a nap inside it.

Ahwwww...come on

Hey there's some fabric left over from the case, enough to make at least two big pillows

I currently use a SKB that has been made to fit my 10M. The previous owner lifted the liner and scooped out some of the foam to make the bell keys fit. Then he glued the liner back in place. It works great. I've had absolutely no problems with it. It might be easier than putting in new liner. Although the leopard skin looks kind of cool.......
The fabric liner in that SKB was very old and stinking dirty. Had no choice to replace it.
This leopard fabric thing started out as a joke, but now that I've seen the 10M inside of it espescially since I've seen the sax with it, I find this is a really fine, classy looking case. Check it out...

Remember what Dolly Parton says. "You wouldn't believe how much time and money looking this tacky takes". :D
Nice job on the case.
My Libido just went up a few notches.
I can just see that thing stretched out before a fireplace!
Ooooeeee, how sweet it is!
Thanks Mando.

A Hiscox alto case will fit the 6M perfectly.
Hey Bootman ; I'm new to the forum and find it most interesting. I'm thinking about rebuilding an original case that came with my latest aquisition : 60's Cleveland tenor that I just had tuned w/new pads. It's a heffer but plays some really deep sounds.
It seems like most on this forum have been at it for awhile and I'm a year+ into the sax thing. (Yamaha alto...Cleveland tenor). Any tips from people out there would be much appreciated. Thanks

Being that the Cleveland case is nothing special, I would just buy a new case.

Thanks Bruce; Kinda figured that's where I'd be going with this. The old case just looked like an era lost...like the old slide buttons on the latches instead of the latches with the bar over that snap down.
Way too much room in the old girl anyway.

I used an SKB Pro on my 30M for years with no modifications or problems. I especially liked it because of the neck slot. True story. It went down a flight of stairs and nothing happened to the horn. The bottom seam lost it's seal but still held. Great case imho.

I saw some cases specially designed for vintage saxophones on junkdude.com and they are not savagely expensive plus they look good too!:D
