I've got a 324xxx Big B alto, and I'm currently using a Runyon Model 22, which gives me a Parker-esque tone to my playing (which surprises me, because he's not really my alto tonal concept). :? I'd lke to try a Custom/Jody Jazz and also a Runyon SR, but what other HR pieces work well with Bueschers for a "traditional" alto sound?

Andres: I have and use, in this order, a new Selmer Super Session F, a new Selmer Soloist F, an older Meyer 6S Medium chamber, and a Barone 7J (all HR pieces) on my Buescher True-Tone, Cigar Cutter, Conn Chu, and Yana A992 altos. All play well for me in my style of jazz (traditional-1920's). DAVE

Dave, how does the SSS stack up with the others? I thought they were only available for sop?

Try a Morgan Excalibur...that's what I have on my Big B alto...great open chamber piece.

Andres: I bought a Super Session F for alto last week from WW&BW-Paris. They are new on the market (see other threads).

Great piece - the best I've played on alto, so far. For me, it is even better than the new Soloists I have for my top altos. More fullness in the sound, better response across the horns' ranges (both vintage and new altos). Plus, on my Chu. the new SS is short enough that I can actually tune sharp, if needed, and the end of the piece is flat and perfectly matches the microtuner's design.

The alto SS plays a lot like my soprano SSs, which is a difficult comparison yet the only way I can describe them. DAVE

Hi Andres! I too have a 324xxx Big B alto so I guess that makes us neighbours :) I play a standard Meyer on mine and that gives a nice straightforward warm jazz sound. Of the others mentioned here, the Morgan Excalibur is the one I would try.

Also try a Jody Jazz too.
