Anyone hear know of the band Morphine? If not I suggest you give a listen, especially those who dabble in or do full-time rock and/or blues. Their saxophonist, Dana Coley, as actually an integral part of the band rather than just part of a horn section or a soloist. He's like a guitarist, horn section, and vocalist all in one! That's what happens when the instrumentation is 2-string bass & vocals, drumset, and bari/tenor sax  Wow, I'm getting a lot of ideas from this stuff... sort of reviving my interest in the bari

I believe Morphine was out of the Boston area. I have two of their CDs - "Cure for Pain" and "Like Swimming". Some neat sounds in both. Dana Colley also plays Bass Sax in the 2nd CD. I like the the wah-wah sax effect he uses. Chris Wood also employed the device from time to time with Traffic (another of my favorite groups). I understand one of the trio passed away not too long ago. Don't know about any recent history.

Yes, singer/bassist (or guitarist depending on how you see it) Mark Sandman did pass away... the band is continuing in the form of something I think is called the Orchestra Morphine, with some new instrumentation, shared lead vocals, etc. but I'm not sure if anything was done with that. What they left behind, though, is really high quality.
Dana Colley and Billy Conway, formally of Morphine, with Laurie Sargent are now, The Twinemen. www.twinemen.com I've been listening to Morphine ever since their first album and finally had the opportunity to hear and meet Dana last night. If you ever, ever get the chance, go see and listen to this band.
