In the original Real Book (non-legal) Vol. 1, I am planning on playing "Lonnie's Lament" in my high school combo. The chord progression they show is (in tenor Bb key):

D-7 E-7|Fmaj7 E-7|D-7 E-7|Fmaj7 E-7| etc...

At the bottom of the page it says "[Solos in C-]". Does that mean that the bass player should just play a concert C- bass line the entire time or a C- 16 bar blues to fit over the form? We tried playing this a few weeks ago. It's an awesome tune to play, but I'd like to know how the changes are supposed to go. Would one follow the changes as above? What to do?

Thanks!

It says "Solos on C-7" aka Cmin7 -- but the bass should not just drone/ostinato (ostinate? obstinate? ) on 'C'. The bass can play a rhythmic figure on just the chord roots, or a walking bass that outlines/hits all the chord roots. It's a pretty simple A-A-B-A' 16-bar form, but not a blues. Try typing "Lonnie's Lament.mp3" for a Google search, you'll find lots of recorded examples.

Ok, I'll do some experimenting.

Thanks!

When we do it we play pretty free/broken time feel in C minor... Not over the head changes.

Just listen to the Coltrane version a lot... and you'll be all set

Joe Lovano recorded an uptempo version (double time feel, I guess, eighth note = 210 ish) that cooks on one of his "Quartets - Live at the Village Vanguard" CDs. They play the changes as written for solos, unlike the original.
