I know, seems pretty basic but...

I've got the original Real Book and at least the first Sher book, probably more, in my computer but I just use individual sheets of music when I need to, so I don't have a current portable fake book.

I'll be in Estonia this summer with an orchestra and am hoping to get in on a jam session or more if I can. I will be bringing only one fake book and need you folks to tell me which one of the many available would have the most usable tunes for a general jam session. Thanks.

I like the songs in the two first ones. I don't think the third one is the one for jam sessions. And of course, the old "the worlds greates fake book" might be even better. One thing that makes me like the first one is that it's hand written. That should probably not change your decision though.

An alternative that I suggest is that you get the legal 6th edition of THE Real Book. It's very cheap (compared to what you probably have to pay for the 5th edition), and you can get it at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0634060384/qid=1104707351/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/002-2854541-4219257?v=glance&s=books&n=507846).

Pretty much all of the songs are "jamable"!

If it were me, I'd get a copy of the fake book that Hal Leonard puts out. I think it's $45, but I use it more than any other book. If I only have enough room to take one book to a jam, that's the one. Has something like 700 or 800 tunes in it.

I can't tell about Estonia but I have the feeling that The Real Book is the one to bring when in most other places of Europe. At least it is in Scandinavia.

Gange - do you meant the Sher legal one or the original Real Book?
Also, is the original available in Eb or just C? Thanks.

There is only one real book... :-) I think I mean the original, as I have never heard of any Sher version. The one I have is pretty... anonymous...
There are C, Bb and Eb versions of it, what I have seen.

I recommend you bring the fake book that sproings out fuzzy snakes in people's faces when they open the front cover. Guaranteed to break the language barrier.

Slight digression: I used to participate in an online community called "Orkut" and the jazz interest group there was heavily populated by cute Estonian chicks. Don't know what it is about Estonia and/or Talin, but this non-scientific sampling indicates that they really dig jazz there - you should have a great time there! Let us know how it works out... 8-)

Whoaaaaah! Allow me a superficial moment. :binky:

Looks like now's a good time to go on that diet I've been sidestepping.
And that exercise plan.
Maybe I can find some more hair, too.
Oh, sigh. Well, maybe those babes've got some hot mothers. What do you think the chances of that are?
