I was wondering how the Custom mouthpiece for tenor is. What type of sound does it get (with and without spoiler), how does it compare with other mpcs in it's price range (quality), and how pleased are you guys with it? Thanks for your comments!

i have been useing the runyon custom on tenor for about 2 years.i use it mostly for big band but it will work fine for jazz combo etc. it is not a paint stripper nor would i use it for rock &roll. its extremely comfortable to play and pretty reed friendly . i dont have a spoiler with mine so i cant help there. i have used almost every mpc made by most of the larger companys and i like this one best for this type of playing. its a great alt to searching for just the right link. plus its RED!

Same here, I beeen using a Custom #8 on my tenor for about 2 years now (and red is the best color  )
I use it it mostly when playing with my brass band. I always use the spoiler, it's brighter and more edgy, just the way I like it. I love that mpc, very easy to blow, good response, blends well with a section when desired. But unlike super20dan, I find that it's a bit picky on reeds, but then again I'm very picky on reeds... so who am I to judge, right?
Compared to other mouthpieces: I've tried a lot of mpcs, the custom is the only plastic mouthpiece I found so far that actually likes me.

What type of reeds work well on the Custom?

Hi Chris,

In terms of reeds, any will do. Many folks recommend Fibracell. Personally I prefer Plasicovers. It's a matter of taste 8)

I had a #9 Custom tenor for a while. It's a good, all-around mpc. As for how it compares to others in it's price-range - it just depends on what you like in a mpc. I prefer mpcs with larger chambers, so I sold my Custom.

I have a tenor Red Custom 8 with spoiler that I have played with fibracells, plasticover's even Bari (baritone size too) and Vandoren V16. It's very reed friendly. Mine sits on the shelf most of the time these days, but I do pull it out every so often. they are cool to look at ;-)

Where did you guys buy your Customs? I'm having a hard time finding one at a reasonable price.

You can order them through any of these:

www.wwbw.com
www.intlmusicalsuppliers.com
www.gigdust.com

Define what you consider a "reasonable price".

The Custom is a very versatile piece, having a near classical tone with the spoiler removed, think swing era big band tone or theater pit orchestra tone. With the spoiler, a more aggressive tone. I played in a 50's-60's oldies Rock and Roll band, and the Custom 8 with spoiler was perfect for this.

My son plays a Custom, without splr, on his bari sax for concert band.

A Custom, with or without the spoiler, will do well for you for 95% of your playing requirements.

So the Custom will work for concert band music? How would it come to a Yani hard rubber mpc (or any similar HR mpc, for that matter)? So far, it seems like it has a more mellow tone (a la concert & swing/big band) with the spoiler removed, and a harsher (rock/jazz fusion) sound with the spoiler. Does this sound about right? Thanks!

Sounds about right, and consistent with Paul's comments.

I meant how will it compare to a Yani mpc, oops.

the custom is more versatile than the rubber yani on tenor .

Hmm, then maybe the Custom isn't what I want. You see, I'll be using the HR Yani mpc for concert/classical, and I want something more specialized for modern fusion/rock, and maybe a little jazz playing. Any recommendations here, or would the Custom with a Spoiler still be the way to go? Thanks.

BTW, I'm looking to keep the price under $100 if possible.

You might look at the XL or Quantum both can be had for about $100
