I finally found a Selmer Jazz SOP mouthpiece with an E facing but the seller thinks they are rare and wants $300. We agreed upon $165 cuz he is my primary instrument salesman.

1. Does anyone know, are these mouthpieces so rare?

2. Why aren't the big-name companies making more vintage-style mouthpieces? They seem to sell well on e-bay.

They do. I have a Selmer D Soloist mouthpiece that is just like the scroll shank vintage Soloist. As a matter of fact I also have the Vintage Soloist too. I can't tell the difference nor can my family or friends. I belive both Runyon and Morgan make new "vintage" pieces also. These are all good mouthpieces with different sounds. :D

Isn't the Selmer Super Session a remake of the Scroll Shank soprano mouthpiece?

SuperDan, you are correct. There "currently" is no selmer jazz sop mouthpiece. But there used to be. I have one that is identical to my alto selmer jazz mouthpiece in every way except size. And it has the Henri Selmer Paris logo. I guess that proves how rare it is that someone with your experience would not have heard of it.

I got this one from an estate sale and out of a Yanagisawi SOP case. Thanks for the comments everyone.

o.k. now i just have to ask does it say jazz on the table like the alto and tenor model?

No, neither of my Selmer Jazz mouthpieces (alto and sop) have jazz on the table. So what am I looking at? I bought the alto piece used from Mills Music. I asked for dukoffs, otto links, and selmer jazz in two facings to try them out. I liked the "reportedly" selmer jazz in the E facing best.

I got the SOP selmer jazz from a friend who deals in instruments and mouthpieces who has heretofore been very accurate about instruments and mouthpieces. He has been in the business for over ten years.

They are identical except for size. What do you think?

I should say, that I pick mouthpieces based on a trial ride, not on the name of the manufacturer or model. But it would be nice to know what I have bought.

the selmer jazz model has jazz inscribed on the mpc table.if it doesnt say jazz there then its not the jazz model. never was a sop jazz model .not that one couldnd play jazz on it as coltrain did use a selmer metal sop mpc. they were intended for classical music and have a pretty dark sound. the jazz model has quite a lot more baffel and gives a much brighter sound.

Here is a link of pictures of various Selmer classic metal mpcs. Does your "jazz" mpc look like one of these?
