If you have music in C concert pitch (C on the piano) you need to transpose the key to A (3 sharps) and the notes down 1-1/2 steps for the alto sax. C on the piano is A on the alto.
C on the alto is Eb on the piano = Eb instrument. C on the tenor sax is Bb on the piano=Bb instrument.

Forum and SaxyGirl,

Try the software package "Finale Guitar". Don't be put off by the name, it has a full compliment of instrumentation.

Transposition is what I mainly use it for. I scan in a piece, check for errors or things that got "lost in translation", create a file for the instrument I need, then cut and paste from one file to another. The rest is automatic.

My price was $99.00. Comes with a year of telephone and on line support.
Tons of features.

It was the least expensive package that I could find that would use a scanner.

After all, I want to PLAY music..

And if you play an arrangement with other winds for instance, remember that you have to play it one octave higher also. So down a minor third and up an octave, or up a major sixth.
Not important in many situations, but it depends on the situation.

Hehe, actually I havn't :)
However transposing down a minor third or up a major sixth is so similiar that if you can play from a C-sheet either one is no real problem.
