Has anyone any information or opinion on a Lewin low pitch tenor sax number 1676. Built in the USA? Silver plate on brass.

They're Martins, imported to the UK and sold as Lewins. Not sure if they're stencils or first line horns; according to my teacher, who has an alto, and Pete Saxpics they can have intonation problems. The general impression though is that they're pretty good horns.

Not sure if this was the right place to pose this question Sax Ant. I've just returned to the board after a 2 week break, and hadn't realised you've posted similar questions in other threads. My advice would be to post in only one section in future if you can, that way you're more likely to get a relevant response.
Welcome to the board and greetings from a fellow UK player.

ummm, wasn't this in the FAQ section a moment ago, or am I going loopy (not impossible...)? If it wasn't then my post above looks a bit dumb, apologies all round

Have you checked Saxpic's site Sax Ant? My teacher's Lewin is identical to my 1928 Martin Handcraft alto (in fact my Martin came in a Lewin case!). Look for the bevelled toneholes to positively ID it as a Martin. Is this the horn you currently play, or one you're looking to buy? FWIW a Lewin alto went on UKeBay for about £200 recently - probably a lot less than it was worth.

Stitch, I was looking to buy at about GBP200. Don't know the condition yet but I was wondering if it's worth furher inspection. From your info it sounds as if it might be. Thanks again, Sax Ant.

Let us know how it goes Sax Ant, certainly looks like a good price. BTW the serial no doesn't fit in the Martin charts (see http://www.saxgourmet.com/serial.html), which could mean it's a stencil (which don't usually follow the standard numbering) or just that Lewin had their own system.
