Has anyone tried out these Chicago horns. There sold by LA Sax, but they are not LA Sax horns. They are made in Germany. I saw one at my tech's today next to a regular LA Sax and they are definitely not the same. According to there web site the idea behind these is to try and recapture some of the sound and quality of older 'Chicago era' horns.
I've never thought much of LA Sax horns, mostly because of the crazy paint jobs they put on them sometimes. What level would you put them at, and, are the Chicago's better than the LA's?
Hey sw3119-
I believe I read somewhere in this forum that these are manufactured by B&S Huller for LA sax. I have tried a couple of quick searches for the thread to no avail. Search engine wouldn't even hit on Chicago Jazz? B&S (or the VMI factory as I believe it is also known) make the Medusa line carried by KesslerMusic, used to make the 2001 (Dave K is offering some on clearance) and used to make the Dave Guardala line.
I don't know if the Chicago Jazz line is based on the B&S 2001 or not, but I have seen nothing but praise for the items coming out of that factory. I guess you would consider this a modern day stencil -like the Keilworth Bundy of old- but I don't know if LA Sax actually makes any saxes or is just a company who buys from various factories and 'brands them'?
Ooops - found a thread that may help, so I'll shut up and pass it on....
