Selmer (London) Pennsylvania (Made in France) Problem.....

Heya guys.

I have a tenor horn stencilled above S/N 4100

This doesn't seem to be the normal Selmer pennsylvania model, and its labled made in france. Can anyone give me a clue as to the manufacturer?

This is a stencil made by leblanc / beaugnier ? is there any history on this company.

This is a pretty exact match esp the left hand little finger plate which is patented to that company. (Which basically nails it down).

Any thoughts on insurance value? I am not going to sell it as it sounds lovely.

Still playing it ... attempting to progress beyond student. Am currently able to play C,D,E,F major and Aflat veeery slowly.

This sax works really well, despite it having had a series of really bad accidents over its life,

for a start the crook has been bent / repaired and re soldered. The bottom of the elbow was dented very badly and the posts down there have been resoldered.

The whole thing has also been relacquered.

All in all these repairs, at least today must surely cost as much as a new pro tenor?

Anyway I really love it.

Never Get a Saxaphone Relaquered, you'll screw up the tone because the metal wont vibrate the same way again

TenorSaxe: I disagree. The argument about what affects a horn and what doesn't goes on and on and the myth is perpetuated by posts like yours. It has been debated extensivley here on SOTW. Relacquering can not be proven to alter a horn's sound.

What IS true is that relacquering is frowned upon in the general marketplace and thus, the resale value of the instrument is diminshed.

Many relacquered saxophones have been done before a current buyer possessed it - hardly the fault of the owner. Mattaw (Mathew) didn't say whether or not he had it done, only that it was relacquered.

My best playing soprano has a coat of after-market lacquer on it - nothing I did, but it is still there. No problem for me - or the horn. DAVE
