Okay, so I'm new here, but not new to playing sax. I have a student that found a horn at a garage sale, bought it cheap, and is planning on using it for a 4-H project by turning it into a lamp.

Now, I tried the horn it just needs some adjustments (new pads, sluggish keys, you know, just an old horn). Now here is where I would like some information.

The engraving on the horn says *Harry Pedler & Sons INC. Elkhart Ind*

I read that Selmer bought this company out a while ago. If anyone has any information about this particular brand, please email me. I am trying to convince my student that if she put just a few more bucks into this horn, it would be a fine horn for a beginner. She could then sell it and make quite a profit (and then the horn would get used and not become a bedroom fixture).

Thanks in advance for any info you might have. My email address is: daveraah@hotmail.com.

Thanks again.

If they want a lamp,,, tell them to go to wall-mart!!!
Please don't let another great horn from the past get ruined!!!
This sax was made in Elkhart in the 40's or 50's.It a great fixer upper!
I bet when done, it would play as great as a King Zepher!

It might sound okay, but as a beginner the fingering problems will retard a beginners progress. A better player could work around the difficult low Bb,b,c,c# and the bad bis key and the clunky g# key and the uncomfortable left thumb rest and fixed right thumb hook- but not a beginner.

I would suggest a yamaha, vito or jupiter before moving up to a Selmer VII
in a few years.

I've been teaching for 30 years, and my store has over 300 saxes. Only when the childs hands are tiny, and cannot clear their left hand of the palm keys,
would I try a vintage horn, where afew models have those palm keys much closer to the body.

Hope this note was of help.

They would buy in stencil horns from buescher, martin , conn etc as pedler didn't manufacture there own. If you can post a picture we could possibly ID it for you but try to stop the lamp making!!!!

davetroll had to wait for almost 4 years to get an answer to his question, so I'm afraid they already turned it into a lamp ... :(
