View Full Version : Ref 36 - True confession: another neck I.D. data point
After all this time that I've been commenting that I've not experienced the alleged stuffyness or resistance that others have observed on the Reference 36, I finally measured the opening on my Ref 36's neck. I was putting this off for a very long time because I didn't want to get into the mindset that I'd have to get it fixed if it didn't fall in the optimum band of diameters. Well...
The inner diameter of my Ref 36 neck is .510".
So there you have it, another data point. 8)
So, is that on spec.?
You tell me what the spec is and I'll let you know. :?
Seriously, I'd be surprised by any manufacturer releasing critical proprietary dimension spec's - even the Q.A. range of acceptable values.
I was a quality control inspector for a SCUBA manufacturer many years ago. I would consider it industrial public relations suicide to release specifications because as soon as someone has a part that they can demonstrate is out-of-spec, the company's Q.A. reputation is soiled (in a bad way).
That aside, there are some repairfolk that believe they know better what the neck opening should be and will modify horns in their effort to achieve optimum performance. It's entirely possible that an out-of-spec neck will compensate for other changes and be entirely wonderful. Or, you could have a number of parameters meet specification at various ends of the acceptable limits and the toloerances add in a negative way.
It still comes down to the test of "Does it play well?"
