I was looking at a number of Runyon Classics today with the idea of purchasing one; however, every one of them had small bits of remaining plastic inside that wasn't smooth. Is this normal. I haven't seen this on any of the hard rubber pieces that I have nor do I remember any of my student models (some of which had to be plastic) having any small pieces remaining.

It would be a pretty simple job to clean it up to an acceptable level if I purchased one but I'd rather not. Maybe I'm being too much of a neat freak!

It is common for Runyons to have this "flash" where the injection mold seams are. They are, for the most part, low cost mass produced pieces (that play very well). You can easily clean it up some with a pocket knife or a file.
