It would seem around the period of the gold medal that SML's finest horns were produced ??

I like Rev D more than GM. The GM sacrifices a bit of warmth in exchange for brightness. The difference is very slight.

In my understanding Rev D and GMI are not much different. The Rev D is the horn that earned the gold medal in the first place. GMII lacks a few of the famous 22 (or was it 24? i forgot) fewtures most notably the rolled tone holes, adjustable bell keyheights and engraving.

I own a GMI tenor and a GMII alto they are both fabulous. I havn't had the opportunity to compare GMI and II horns side by side but I bet the differences are marginal with respect to sound, intonation and handling. It's a matter of taste.

Rev D and GMI receive more attention and higher prices generally than GMII but I don't see a reason to discard GMII.
