I'm looking for some vintage MPs but was wondering what modern mouthpieces come with a large chamber and work well with a Big B tenor. Some initial suggestions from the dealer were a Jody Jazz and a Morgan 5L.

For sound reference, I like 20s-30s jazz, Ella songbook, early big band and I like a rich, fat sound.

What else besides Jody & Morgan should I try to check out?

May be a Runyon SR Mouthpiece

If you're thinking about a Jody Jazz, check out a plain old Runyon Custom, which is the JJ before the tweaks, and less expensive too.

If you're able to do so, try out both the Morgan L (large chamber) and EL (Excalibur large chamber) models. Both of them can have a big, rich, dark sound. The main difference between them is that the EL has a thinner chamber wall. This helps to give it a greater amount of flexibility and an easier response. Never the less, both of them are superb large chamber pieces.

don't forget good old links - metal and HR.... both played well on my aristocrat. A good HR link will work very well for the sound you speak of. The morgan 8L i had was nice, slightly darker than my early babbit HR link.

the JodyJazz ESP is very nice too, has a large chamber, but straight walls by the rails. This piece has a narrow tip and so feels quite different to a link. They're pricey too - $350

i have played both JJ and runyon custom pieces. They're not really large chamber pieces, but worked ok.........a little characterless for my likes.

A Meyer HR or Bari HR can also be real nice..... although i think a good link HR is better on the Aristocrat.

As far as I know the Big B is not mouthpiece picky, so you should be able to use most pieces.... That said you're description of sound concept suggest that a large chamber low baffle piece is probably best. Go try 3 or 4 links (sizes 7-8), they're not expensive. If you can't try, then order a Morgan L or EL - quality should be good on all of these.

I'd say a Morgan L is a good bet. I've found them to be quite a bit darker, or more restrained I should say than an EL.
