What are your opinions on Dave Koz? Do you like his music...do you consider him a jazz artist? Or is a "pop" artist, the popular opinion of Kenny G. Thanks!

I've been watching Dave Koz for more than ten years now. I remember when he was the saxplayer for Richard Marx. His first two albums were a pop jazz kind of feel, but his last two albums he changed veins a little bit.
He has extraordinary talent. His second release Lucky Man was a real breath of fresh air from alot of the pop jazz players. Some of his music has a funk groove to it and it ends up being real catchy. I admire his talent tremendously, in the mix today Koz is one of the best :D

I don't get into arguments over who is a "jazz artist"---- the field is too wide.
Let's just say he'd blow any of us off the stage in 10seconds flat and I'd much rather have his bank account than mine!

I saw him perform at Border's in King of Prussia last fall. He IS a good
player, and blows alto better than soprano from what I heard. However,
he was there to promote one of those Kenny G-like CD's: something
about "a father's lullaby". Way too commercial, and even he pointed out that it was a little strange, since he has no kids of his own! I went there
really hoping to enjoy his music, but left after 20 minutes or so. Good
talent, disappointing marketing.

In my opinion he's missing technique from his playing.

Beautiful Player - very melodic. Very smooth connected playing. I think many tend to downplay the difficulty of playing cleanly and ultra smooth. Dave also has his tonal concept well defined. Anyone who can become a household name (saxophone playing households) and earn a living playing saxophone - merits some respect and consideration from all of us.

- he wrote this in 2003. It should be 6 years of scales and long tones :thumbrig:
