the market is saturated with box sets, often overly expensive and extraneous. the new ayler box is truly valuable in that it offers mainly unreleased material of extreme value, and it's not terribly expensive
(a rare value from the often expensive revenant records); cduniverse offers it at a mere $75 or so versus the $105 list price. 7 cd's of music, two of interviews with Ayler and Don Cherry, and an extra cd with a few tracks from Ayler in the army band.
there is so much to take in that it is difficult to pick out highlights. includes performances of Ayler playing standards with a swedish jazz group, and also with Cecil Taylor's group (w/ Jimmy Lyons, Gary Peacock and Sunny Murray), his own trio of Peacock and Murray, the same trio with Don Cherry, also groups including Milford Graves, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Frank Wright, and Pharoah Sanders. Yes the fidelity is often questionable but the documentation no less important as a result. highly enlightening. also includes a clothbound booklet and other fun memorabilia.
blistering education in a box.
